Mario Kart 8 content partnership with Mercedes results in amazing commercial

Nintendo has partnered with Mercedes-Benz for a little cross-promotional action around Mario Kart 8, which comes to Wii U in North America this Sunday, May 30. The deal will bring a Mercedes GLA kart racer body (pictured above) into the game as downloadable content, though the add-on is only confirmed for Japan at this time. Perhaps not forever though.

As a Nintendo UK spokesperson told Joystiq, “As for the information relating to the distribution of the GLA kart for Mario Kart 8 outside Japan, we will be able to announce in the near future.” It may not be confirmation, but there’s certainly the suggestion here that the Mercedes GLA DLC will be taking a road trip to other parts of the globe.

The DLC will reportedly be a free download, and there’s some indication that a GLA tournament may be planned for fall 2014. You can read more about what we think of the Mercedes GLA — the actual car, that is — right here.

While the DLC may or may not ever leave Japan, a commercial from Mercedes-Benz Japan announcing the partnership is already making the rounds on the Internet. And it is delightful. No preamble, just watch.

Every Mario Kart game ranked from best to worst
mario kart tour launch day record nintendo mobile

It's hard to imagine a time before Mario and his friends (and foes) got together to speed down the racetrack while throwing shells and hitting speed boosts. The series was a hit from its first entry on the SNES and is still going strong. Today, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is not only the best-selling game on the Switch, despite being a port of the Wii U game, but is still getting new content with the Booster Course Pass adding both revamped classic tracks and a few new ones. Just like the mainline Mario games, the Kart series always changes things up between entries, giving each one its own unique flavor while retaining the tight racing feel. Looking back over the entire franchise, we've ranked every game in the series from best to worst -- though even the series' lowest point is still fun.

8 classic courses we want to see in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s final DLC wave
Mario, Link, Isabelle, and a Squid Kid race down the track in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch.

Mario Kart 8’s decade-long life cycle is finally coming to an end. On June 12, Nintendo will drop the penultimate wave of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s Booster Course Pass DLC, adding another handful of retro courses to the already-loaded racing game. It’ll follow that up with one final update later this year, capping off a long post-launch cycle for one of the finest multiplayer games ever made.

While we wait to hear what Wave 6 will bring, Mario Kart fans are left with one final debate: Which classic tracks deserve the final few spots? There are only eight more courses coming, but there are still plenty of great tracks from the franchise’s long history that are worthy of a modern remake. From a SNES classic to one of the best iterations of Rainbow Road, we put together our own wish list of courses we’d like to see make the cut before Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s grand finale later this year.
