Though E3 remains days away, Square Enix has lifted the curtain on the titles it will be showing this year with a Friday press release detailing the upcoming show.

New titles include Front Mission Evolved, a third-person shooter based on the “wanzer” humanoid war machine, Nier, an action-adventure game that pits players against a virus, and Order of War, a real-time strategy game set during WWII. Supreme Commander will also see a sequel set to come out in 2010.

Key art for The Game Awards 2024.

To cap off 2024, The Game Awards saw some of the year's biggest and best games -- like Astro Bot, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Black Myth: Wukong -- fight for Game of the Year and several other prestigious awards. Game Awards 2024: the case for and against every Game of the Year nominee
Cloud and Aerith dancing in a play in Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth.

After two predictable years of Game of the Year winners, this year's Game Awards are set to be a genuine battle. The 2024 ceremony, which airs live on Thursday, December 12, will feature six games duking it out for the same award that Elden Ring and Baldur's Gate 3 so handily won. What's exciting about this year's race (if you actually care about watching awards shows as a spectator sport) is that there's no clear frontrunner. Any of the games nominated has a realistic chance to win, and that's perhaps the only time that's ever happened in the show's history.

That's great news if you like drama and terrible news if you're participating in a friendly betting pool. While I can't give you an expert answer on who to put on your prediction ballot, I can give you insight into why each game could reasonably win and just as easily lose at Thursday's big show. Just don't blame me if your final pick loses; no matter what you select, you can't say I didn't warn you! (But if you do get it right, you can thank me, too.)

Top 10 Games of 2024

Last year, in the midst of a loaded holiday season filled with franchise hits, players were quick to declare 2023 the best year for games since 2017. That may very well have been true thanks to titles like Alan Wake 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and our own Game of the Year winner, Baldur’s Gate 3. So I am not speaking lightly when I say that I truly believe that 2024 blew it out of the water.

That may sound absurd depending on what kinds of games you gravitate toward. Yes, for those who enjoy big-budget titles exclusively, 2024 could be viewed as underwhelming. It didn’t include a wealth of franchise heavy hitters, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth standing out as the big exception. Aside from that highlight, it was a niche year for blockbusters. RPG fans had plenty to enjoy thanks to hits like Metaphor: ReFantazio, and Astro Bot was this year’s charmer in lieu of a killer Nintendo app. If you’re the kind of person who thinks that Black Myth: Wukong was one of the year’s only solid games, I understand the disappointment.
