Tomb Raider: The Ten Thousand Immortals novel is a direct sequel to 2013 game

The follow-up to the recent reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise won’t hit shelves until 2015, but fans of the new (and some would say, improved) Lara Croft won’t have to wait that long to find out what happened in the aftermath of Tomb Raider and Lara’s harrowing island adventure. An upcoming novel will pick up where the 2013 game left off.

Tomb Raider: The Ten Thousand Immortals is written by Dan Abnett and Nik Vincent, and it unfolds within the new continuity of the franchise, beginning at the conclusion of the game’s narrative and offering up a new, in-canon adventure featuring Lara Croft. The plot synopsis for the book, which will be available October 2014, is as follows:

Haunted by what she was forced to endure in order to survive her first adventure, Lara Croft wants only to put her horrifying ordeal on Yamatai island behind her. Her modest wish shatters as she’s plunged into a frantic race to save her best friend Sam from a toxic overdose. Desperate for a remedy, Lara searches for anything that could help Sam. A wisp of hope arising from a myth gives Lara purpose: the story of an ancient and mysterious artifact that could heal her dying friend, and possibly help explain the supernatural events she witnessed on Yamatai.

However, Lara is not alone in her pursuit of the treasure. A nefarious magnate, a shadow society, and lethal henchmen will stop at nothing to exploit the powerful relic for their own ends. The hunt drives Lara across the globe, through a twisted web of conspiracy, suspicious contacts, and life-or-death intrigue, as she seeks salvation for her friend and the truth behind the legendary talisman.

Award-winning British author Dan Abnett is probably best known for his work in comics, where he helped relaunch Marvel Comics’ Guardians of the Galaxy series and penned the recent series The New Deadwardians for DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. On the gaming side, Abnett also contributed to the upcoming Alien: Isolation and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, as well as penning the screenplay for 2010’s Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie.

Arc Raiders is fun, but I’m still doubtful about extraction shooters’ future
A player character in Arc Raiders.

I had a good time playing Arc Raiders at a preview event. So, why don't I feel like playing it again at launch?

Arc Raiders is the latest game attempting to stand out in the extraction shooter space. This shooter genre is very hardcore, tasking players with safely finding valuable loot across large levels and extracting before they can be killed. If players do die on a mission, they lose almost everything equipped to their character. It's a high-risk, high-reward that developers are treating as the next battle royale-like craze. Now, the developers of The Finals, Embark Studios, are entering into the space with Arc Raiders, a game they reworked to become an extraction shooter.

Borderlands 4 is coming sooner than expected, with a State of Play tomorrow
Borderlands 4

You don't have to wait long to dive back into the zany chaos of Borderlands 4 — Gearbox Software and 2K Games just announced the release date has been moved forward by two weeks to September 12, and that Sony will host a State of Play at 2 PM PT tomorrow dedicated entirely to the upcoming game.

According to the social media announcement, the State of Play will air at 2PM PT/5PM ET and feature "over 20 minutes of new weapons, abilities, missions, and more." Gearbox Software didn't provide a reason for moving up the release, but it did state that the decision comes after "careful consideration" and "a lot of meetings, playtesting, and incredible development work."

Splitgate 2 announces an open beta and an “infinite” number of maps
Looking through a portal in Splitgate 2.

If you haven't tried out Splitgate 2 yet, you'll have a chance next month with the start of its open beta. The beta begins on May 22 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, along with PS4 and Xbox One, all with full crossplay support (and that means no lack of players.) Developer 1047 Games hasn't said how long the beta will last, but they did tease some of the new content.

The open beta will introduce new weapons, bringing the in-game total to more than 25 different choices. New game modes are also joining the beta, including Takedown from the first game. Think of it like an elimination-style match where you have to eliminate the entire enemy team before they can respawn; the mode can often come down to a frenetic game of hide-and-seek toward the end, where the only surviving player tries to last long enough for reinforcements to spawn.
