Amazon Kindle Fire unveiling and hands-on photos

We managed to attend Amazon’s press conference live today in New York. At the event, CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled the company’s new 7-inch Android tablet, the Kindle Fire. We weren’t allowed to hold the tablet ourselves, but we were able to snap some photos up close and get live demonstrations of the unit. We’ll have full impressions and some video up in the coming hours, but for now check out a few close up photos of working units and we’ve included a good portion of the presentation that Bezos made to unveil the tablet. He went over every major Amazon service and pointed out how they were all going to be integrated into the Kindle Fire. Check it out! If you have any questions (and we actually know the answers), we’ll be happy to field them in the comments area.

TikTok app on iPhone.

Content creators working to find other platforms for their videos amid the TikTok ban may want to take a breather. There's a chance that TikTok won't go dark this weekend after all.

According to a report from NBC News, President Joe Biden's administration is exploring ways to keep TikTok in the U.S. despite the ban being scheduled to go into effect on Sunday. In other words, it's trying to delay the ban on the video-sharing app provided that the Supreme Court doesn't issue a ruling on the law before the holiday weekend is over.

Samsung’s most mysterious Galaxy S25 model is still being spotted
The titanium frame on the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

There’s still plenty of uncertainty about the mysterious Galaxy S25 Slim and its release, but it appears the device believed to be the S25 Slim is still being tested out, as evidenced by a discovery made in an unreleased version of Samsung’s One UI 7 software.

Spotted in a test build of One UI 7 — which is currently in beta — is a reference to the SM-S937B, a model number which has been associated with the Galaxy S25 Slim. Regulatory submissions have helped us identify the model numbers for the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus, and Galaxy S25 Ultra models, which all neatly continue on from the model numbers used for the Galaxy S24 series.

This tiny sensor could be the future of smartphone photography
The all-in-one stack on the PxE imaging camera

If you’ve been taking portrait photos on your phone for several years, you’ll know that most phones have gotten progressively better. As smartphone camera technology has evolved, so has the ability of phone makers to capture depth information better. As a result, we're able to take portrait photos with better bokeh and detail.

However, there’s still a long way to go, especially as each smartphone takes wildly different portrait photos. Last week, during CES 2025, I saw a new holographic technology that holds a lot of promise and could usher in a new era of smartphone portrait photography. Here’s how it works and everything you need to know about it.
