Apple launched its highly anticipated music service last June, bringing streaming music, 24-hour radio, and a host of other features to music lovers all over the globe. Outside of its audible benefits, the Cupertino-based company also included a three-month free trial of Apple Music for iPhone users with a valid Apple ID. While this has certainly been a boon for those interested in the service, the September 30 trial end date rapidly approaches leaving many scrambling to avoid paying the $9.99 per month — or $14.99 per month for a family membership — once the trial ends.
Because the steps to opt out of Apple Music’s auto-renewal option aren’t entirely clear, we dug through the service to find the easiest way to go about forgoing the subscription charge at the end of the trial. Just follow these simple steps and rest assured Apple won’t come knocking for your hard earned money come September 30.
Step 1. Navigate to your Apple Music account page
To turn off the auto-renewal feature within Apple Music, first open the application and click on the silhouetted head icon (Apple Music’s Account icon) in the upper left corner of the screen. On the ensuing menu, click Apple ID and select Use Existing Apple ID if you already have an Apple ID account, or Create New Apple ID if you’ve yet to set one up. After inputting the necessary information, select View Apple ID near the bottom of the account menu to navigate to your Apple ID’s settings page.
Step 2. Turn off Automatic Renewal in your Apple ID account settings
Once your Apple ID’s account settings page opens, scroll down to the Subscriptions field and select the link which says Manage. The following window displays your subscription details for Apple Music including the length of the free trial, if you’re signed up for an individual or family plan, as well as an Automatic Renewal slider. To turn off automatic renewal — thus opting out of Apple charging your credit/debit card at the conclusion of the free trial — simply click on the slider to move it to Off. After a window pops up asking you to confirm turning off the auto-renewal feature, click Turn Off to approve the selection. With the slider now assigned to Off, your free Apple Music trial ends September 30 and you’ll no longer have access to the service unless you decide to pay the monthly fee.
