Turn your tablet into a typewriter with the Qwerkywriter

I love typewriters, so when I found out about the Qwerkywriter, I was in awe. It’s a modern age Bluetooth keyboard in the shape of an old typewriter that works with your computer, tablet or phone. It’s beautiful. It has vintage style keys. It sounds like the real thing. It even has a return bar. No bell, though.

You can use your tablet in landscape mode or portrait mode. It looks great and is really functional in landscape mode. It leans back a bit so you can see the screen properly. In portrait mode, you can reach the home button, but you won’t be able to use the fingerprint scanner to unlock the device. I typically use my tablet in landscape mode anyway, so it’s not a problem for me.

Because it’s Bluetooth, it does tend to disconnect every once in awhile. But that’s been known to happen with Bluetooth devices. It’s also easy to reconnect. I find the easiest way is just to flip the power button off and on again. It reconnects immediately.

It weighs 3 pounds, so it’s weighty, like a good typewriter should be, but lightweight, like a good gadget should be. It does take a little getting used to when typing. Expect a few days of missteps here and there. I like that it pushes my hands away from the table and up into a better ergonomic position.

I think my biggest complaint is that there’s no command key on right side of the space bar. I’m so used to Mac shortcuts, and my laptop has a Command key on both sides of the space bar, so I’ve had to spend some mental power changing habits. Any time you change keyboards, you have to deal with that, I suppose. This Qwerky Toys logo button is the command key for Mac, and the Windows button on a PC.

You can’t silence the keys, but if you’re going to get this keyboard, you’re going to want it to be true to what it is … a mechanical typewriter. Just don’t take it to your local coffee shop, and you’ll be fine.

The return bar comes defaulted as an Enter button. It’s on the opposite side than you’re used to, but it is really satisfying. And you can program it to do whatever you want. Choose up to five characters and record that command. Every time you hit the return bar, it’ll do what you programmed. It won’t log any shortcuts that include the Command Key. I found that out the hard way, but you should be able to do almost anything else.

I love it, and it’s a beautiful accessory for my desk. It’s not an impulse buy at $350, but it is a great gift or something to splurge on.

What do you think about this keyboard? I’d love to hear. Leave a comment below. And be sure to share this video on your favorite social media site.

iOS 17 might add a huge Android feature to your iPhone
App Store displayed on an iPhone 14 Pro against a pink background

As Apple’s Wideworld Developers Conferencce gets closer, the rumors have continued coming in at rapid succession. Over the weekend, in his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims that iOS 17 will support app sideloading to comply with European regulations. This would allow iPhone users to download apps and games that are hosted on digital storefronts that are not Apple’s official App Store — something Android phones have been able to do for years.

With the ability to sideload apps, customers don’t necessarily need to use Apple’s App Store to download and purchase apps or make in-app purchases. This change would also mean developers can bypass Apple’s 15% to 30% fees from all purchases.

Apple CEO Tim Cook looks at a display of brand new redesigned MacBook Air laptop during the WWDC22

Apple is planning a packed line-up for its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 5, which could become “one of the most critical events in the company’s history.” Aside from the company’s upcoming Reality Pro headset, there will be major updates to Apple’s software systems, including the biggest watchOS revamp since the Apple Watch launched in 2015.

That’s according to a new report from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, who has a history of accurate predictions and leaks surrounding Apple products. It suggests that WWDC will be a chance for Apple to set out its future ambitions for a “post-iPhone era.”

Own an iPhone, iPad, or MacBook? Install this critical update right now
IOS 16.4.1 UPDATE.

Apple has released software updates for iPhones and iPads that are light on features, but they are critically important from a security perspective. The updates — iOS 16.4.1 and iPadOS 16.4.1 — started rolling out on Friday, but you should install them on your iPhone and iPad as soon as possible to protect your devices from attacks.

In its official release note, Apple says the updates patch two security flaws that “may have been actively exploited.” Now, Apple doesn’t disclose security issues before conducting thorough research, both in-house and in collaboration with cybersecurity experts. In a nutshell, when Apple publicly announces a security flaw, and it comes with a “Critical Vulnerability” badge, you should grab the fix as soon as Apple makes them available.
