Avengers cast assembles in seven-part banner

avengers assembleMarvel Studios didn’t have a big presence at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, but that doesn’t mean they were entirely absent from the annual pop-culture event.

Over the four-day show, Marvel unveiled a series of promo art posters for The Avengers, next year’s superhero team-up extravaganza that puts Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, and Thor on the same screen (along with Nick Fury, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and a host of other returning characters). The last promo poster was released Sunday evening, revealing the new look for Hulk, Marvel’s smash-happy green goliath.

Along with offering fans a good indication of what each of the Avengers characters will look like when they return to the screen in 2012, the posters also combined to form a pretty amazing banner image that showcases each of the major characters returning for the film. The banner also reveals the first look at the massive S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier, and the “Quinjets” the heroes will use to get from one mission to the next.

From left to right, the banner image features Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow (with the Quinjet in the background), Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Chris Evans as Captain America (with his new, modern-era costume), Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Jeremy Renner a Hawkeye. On the far right, there’s the S.H.I.E.L.D. trio of Sam Jackson as Nick Fury, Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, and Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill. The S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier can be seen in the background.

Directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers hits theaters May 4, 2012.

Bringing back the original Avengers won’t save the MCU
The cast of "The Avengers."

It’s no secret in Hollywood that Marvel Studios is facing some serious issues that are now playing out in a very public way. Although the challenges Marvel has to deal with pale in comparison to the ones that the recently reorganized DC Studios will have to work through, the world’s biggest superhero movie studio simply isn’t the powerhouse that it used to be.

Earlier this week, Variety laid out many of Marvel’s current challenges in great detail, as well as a few plans to reignite the franchise. The report even indicates that there have been discussions about bringing back all of the original Avengers stars for a new sequel. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk never really left the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye was semi-retired even before Renner’s life-threatening accident earlier this year. However, Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) were already written out in Avengers: Endgame. Cap got to live out his life in the past, but Iron Man and Black Widow both died on-screen.

The New Avengers standing together

Earth's Mightiest Heroes have been front-and-center in the Marvel comic book world for decades. Thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), this band of superheroes otherwise known as the Avengers has skyrocketed in popularity beyond the comic book medium. Think about it, for those of us who can vividly remember back to 2007, imagine asking several people on the street during that year who Iron Man is. Most who weren't comic book fans likely would've shrugged. Now, Tony Stark is a household name - not just in comic books or movies, but in pop culture at large.

While the movies are absolutely thrilling, the Avengers have a long history in Marvel publications of saving the world and tangling with the most powerful baddies comic book writers could cook up. Some of those stories have been adapted for the big screen, while others simply remain as the creative endeavor of an author and artist in the pages of Marvel comics, graphic novels, and collected editions. Let's examine some of the Avengers' best adventures.

Without Marvel or big studios, San Diego Comic-Con 2023 still mattered
Mark as an Invincible flying above the cityscape.

The 2023 San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone until next year. For the better part of the week, Comic-Con devoured most of the non-Barbenheimer discourse in pop culture with exclusive previews, trailers, collectibles, and more comic books than you could ever read in a lifetime.

It can be an overwhelming experience for Comic-Con newcomers -- and even for veteran attendees who can remember when the show was held at a much smaller venue just a few decades ago. In the aftermath of this year's Comic-Con, we're taking a look at the six big takeaways from SDCC 2023.
