‘Solo’ includes a shout-out to one of the worst Star Wars games ever made

star wars

Warning: The following reveals a minor plot point in the new Star Wars movie. If you want to go see Solo: A Star Wars Story completely spoiler-free, this is not the article you’re looking for.

Buried amongst the intergalactic hijinks in Solo: A Star Wars Story is an obscure video game reference, but one that gamers of a certain age will pick up on immediately. It’s notable because not only was it a video game, but a bad video game — one of the worst ever released bearing the Star Wars name.

In one scene Qi’ra (Emelia Clark), Han Solo’s former flame, dispatches a bad guy with a slick martial arts move. She then reveals that another crime lord had taught her a fighting style known as “Teräs Käsi.”

Old-school PlayStation gamers may recognize the name from the 1997 game Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi by LucasArts. It was a ponderous fighting game derivative of franchises like Tekken, and it featured such Star Wars luminaries as Luke Skywalker, Boba Fett, and Darth Vader stringing together combos by punching and kicking each other across a variety of environments, including the ice-swept plains of Hoth. There was even an unlockable bikini-clad “Slave Leia” character in the game.

It was especially memorable because it was bad. Really bad. IGN gave Masters of Teräs Käsi a 4/10, saying that “watching the fighters move is almost like watching animated versions of the Kenner toys.” The controls were sluggish and the special moves underwhelming.

Kotaku profiled the game in a 2015 feature, noting that the martial arts discipline had first appeared in the Steve Perry Star Wars novel Shadows of the Empire. Perry coined the term from the Finnish words for “steel” and “hands.”

In addition to the multimedia cross-platform push for Star Wars properties by LucasArts in the late ‘90s (Shadows of the Empire was also a well-received N64 game), Teräs Käsi was an attempt to add more women warriors to the lore, as production manager Camela Boswell explained to Star Wars Insider in 1998. “With this game, aside from Leia there was definitely a drive to get another strong female character,” Boswell said. “That was part of getting Arden Lyn off the ground.”

Arden stayed grounded, and the game has developed its own dubious distinction in video game lore. It won’t make anyone’s top-ten Star Wars games list, but it’s never too late for a reboot. Perhaps a virtual reality adaptation can finally give Teräs Käsi its due?

Solo: A Star Wars Story opened galaxy-wide on May 25, 2018.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor release date pops up on Steam ahead of Game Awards
Cal Kestis with BD-1 droid on his shoulder.

The release date of the highly anticipated Star Wars game Star Wars Jedi: Survivor leaked on the game's official Steam page.
A Steam Page for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor went live with this release date information on Monday morning, seemingly ahead of a heavily rumored appearance at The Game Awards. The store page description reveals more details about Star Wars Jedi: Survivor as well as its Deluxe Edition, which contains cosmetics that make protagonist Cal Kestis look like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo and the pre-order bonus with a costume, Lightsaber, and Blaster based on Obi-Wan.

The "About This Game" section also provides more details on the game. Narratively, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's Steam page explains that "Cal is driven to make a stand during the galaxy’s darkest times -- but how far is he willing to go to protect himself, his crew, and the legacy of the Jedi Order?" On the gameplay side of things, new Force abilities, Lightsaber fighting styles, and enemies to take down are teased. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor looks like it will be a galaxy-trotting adventure like its predecessor the description hints that there will be lots of planets to explore and that they'll be bigger and have more secrets than the ones in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
EA and Respawn Entertainment have been relatively quiet regarding Star Wars Jedi: Survivor since announcing the game in May, so it's exciting to get a lot of new information about the game like its sooner-than-expected release date. If the rumors are true, this may have deflated the hype from one of The Game Awards 2022's big reveals.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on March 15, 2023.

While the oversaturation of content on Disney+ is beginning to affect quality -- Star Wars included -- Andor is making an impressive effort to revitalize the IP. Its down to earth and gritty scope is a breath of fresh air, and it's making familiar ground feel worth revisiting. As the show spurs renewed excitement over Star Wars, the video game medium offers some great experiences for fans looking to chase that Andor hype.

We've yet to get a similarly grounded, stealth third-person shooting game in this universe for the modern age. Perhaps the canceled Star Wars 1313 might have scratched that itch to some degree, but games like Fallen Order and Battlefront II can touch on related thematic points.
