Right now, around 70 percent of the people who visit Pinterest are female, but more and more male visitors are appearing — the social media site reports that the number of men using the portal regularly doubled in the last year. Now Pinterest is aiming to attract even more male users with the launch of a new set of smart search tools.

As part of the Guided Search feature Pinterest introduced last April, it’s now filtering results based on your gender. That means if you’re looking for watches, bikes, shoes or fitness gear then you’re going to see a much more relevant set of results based on whether you’re a man or a woman. In theory, that should give guys an easier time filtering out all of the content with a more feminine angle.

You’ll still be able to override the feature if you want to see everything on offer or you’re searching for a gift for your partner. A company spokesperson told TechCrunch that the goal is to surface more relevant results and make the site as useful as possible to the fast-growing male demographic, those people searching for clothes, technology, travel, gadgets and outdoor gear.

“For example, say you’re looking for a new watch,” explains Pinterest. “Before when you searched Pinterest for ‘watches,’ your results would include mostly women’s timepieces. But now, men will see Pins and guides inspired by what other guys have Pinned, and everybody’s results should feel a lot closer to what they’re looking for.”

Pinterest is promising more new search features in the near future as it looks to capitalize on the influx of male users, particularly outside the U.S. — the site does offer something distinctively different from other types of social networks, but like any other platform it has to work out a way to reduce the noise and give users the most relevant content.

Pinterest makeup searches can soon be customized by skin tone
pinterest make up skin tone search tool pinterestskintonesmobile

More than half of Pinterest’s biggest searches for skin-related topics like makeup include a descriptor for skin color -- so Pinterest is rolling out a tool to help users fine-tune their results. After testing the tool last year, on Thur January 24, Pinterest announced what it calls inclusive beauty searches on the mobile app, designed to refine results for makeup and hair.

Prompted by the users using terms like "dark skin," "pale skin," and "olive skin" to narrow down results for specific makeup looks, Pinterest launched testing of the tool on the desktop version of the platform in April. The tool only pops up for certain beauty searches related to hair and makeup, displaying a dropdown menu of different "palettes." Picking a palette allows users to choose a range of skin tones to narrow down the search results.

Can’t get enough Pinterest ideas? Pinterest boards will now have a second section filled with suggestions based on your current pins and board topics. On Tuesday, October 2, Pinterest launched a new tab for boards called “More Ideas” to house personalized recommendations. The update comes alongside suggested sections to streamline organization.

Pinterest says the new tab is inspired by ideas already saved to the board, creating suggestions tailored specifically to that board. The new tab is located underneath the name of the board on both mobile apps and the web-based version, effectively dividing the board into two sections, your pins and more ideas.
