Dell offers sneak preview of the Venue 8 7000, world’s thinnest tablet

Dell boss Michael Dell on Tuesday unveiled the company’s latest tablet, the ultra-thin Venue 8 7000.

Dell claims that its profile of just 6mm makes it the world’s thinnest tablet, while the weight of the 8.4-inch device – 310 grams – places it midway between the 7.9-inch iPad Mini Retina and Google’s 7-inch Nexus 7 device.

The Dell boss showed off its new slate during Intel’s Developer Forum keynote in San Francisco, with Dell joining Intel CEO Brian Krzanich on stage to give the gathered audience a brief overview of the Intel-powered tablet.

The Venue 8 7000 stands out not only for being the thinnest tablet available, but also for being the first to incorporate Intel’s RealSense 3D camera technology, which includes depth-mapping functionality allowing you to measure the distance between two points up to a range of several meters simply by dragging your finger between two objects shown on the display.

RealSense also lets you adjust focus after you’ve taken a photo, so if you want the background out of focus and an object in the foreground sharp, you simply tap on that object. And if there are several objects located one behind the other, you can choose one to be sharp and the others to blur, creating a more striking image in the process.

RealSense works using a bunch of camera sensors placed down one side of the tablet, which forces a slightly imbalanced design that might not be to everyone’s taste.

The Venue 8 7000 comes with a 2560 x 1600 OLED display and is set to hit stores in early November, Dell said. Beyond these details, little else was revealed. But with the tablet’s official launch just around the corner, we can expect to find out more soon.
