Chromecast is about to get a host of fun new features

Google’s Chromecast is quite the popular media streamer. According to the Mountain View-based company’s latest facts and figures, the malleable media dongle has sold impressively well — 17 million units to date, in fact — and managed to accrue a 20,000-strong app library. Considering the brand’s momentum, Google’s decision not to announce a beefed-up Chromecast successor at the company’s annual I/O conference was somewhat surprising. But perhaps in an effort to avoid the inevitable app fragmentation that could follow, Google’s instead choosing to focus on enhancements from which all Chromecast users can benefit: new software and development tools.

Chromecast is first and foremost a media consumption device, so it makes sense that the team at Google is focusing on making video and music playback even better. It’s introducing a new API that willl let apps like Netflix jump from one piece of content to the next seamlessly — while one video’s playing in a queue, the next can buffer in the background. Those queues will in some cases be manipulable — you’ll be able to re-order, add, and remove clips from queues, much like what’s possible in YouTube’s casting mode right now — but it will depend on the app’s back end.

The Chromecast may be a cheap piece of hardware, but it’s brimming with potential, so Google is beginning to explore new frontiers. Two new APIs, Game Manager and Remote Display, are aimed squarely at the gaming crowd. Game Manger makes it easier for developers to create multiplayer games like Google’s General Knowledge Quiz — “castable” games can now create sessions joinable by others and synchronized across players, regardless of mobile platform. Remote Display, on the other hand, is geared more towards single-player sessions — it can put interface elements like a HUD or virtual steering wheel on your television, for example.

Google has partnered with a few development houses to showcase the new capabilities. By far, the most impressive titles are Ubisoft’s Speedboat Paradise and Rolocule’s Motion Tennis. Speedboat Paradise has players navigate a tumultuous sea, displayed on TV, using their phones as steering wheels. Motion Tennis is set in a much calmer setting — a quiet grass tennis court — but potentially more demanding physically: you rally balls back and forth by swinging your phone.

The best thing about the Chromecast is its simplicity and low barrier of entry, said Google Cast Product Manager Nathan Camarillo to GamesBeat in an interview. “You don’t need to have eight GamePads lying around,” he said. “Everybody can pull a phone out of their pockets. They can initiate an app, connect to the TV, and play this great game together. They’re usually games that are easy to understand and you can learn really quickly.”

And that — along with a steady string of new services, including the recently announced HBO Now — is why Chromecast will likely continue to sell at a steady clip. A $35 dongle that handles most of the games families play on far more expensive consoles, after all, is a great value proposition.

Google Chrome on iOS gets 6 new features to take on Safari
The Google Chrome logo on a smartphone.

While Apple is strengthening privacy and giving new capabilities to tabs in Safari with iOS 16, Google is updating Chrome for iOS with six new features. Some of these features are already available on Android, and others will be available later. Regardless, iPhone and iPad owners who use Chrome have a lot to look forward to.

The new update brings enhanced protection to iOS, which protects you from phishing attacks and malware by alerting you about password breaches and warning you about potentially risky sites. When entering these credentials in Chrome on Android or your desktop, you might receive a warning if your username or password is compromised. That feature -- called Enhanced Safe Browsing -- is now making its way to iOS. You can turn on Enhanced Safe Browsing on your iPhone or iPad by going to Chrome > More > Settings > Enhanced Safe Browsing.

The 5 new features your Pixel phone is getting today
Google Pixel 6 Pro top back in hand.

Check your Pixel phone right now, as Google is sending out its regular new feature update starting today. It will arrive on all Pixel phones from the Pixel 3a to the Pixel 5a first, and then come to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro later this month. Here's what to expect.

Glance on Pixel
Your phone will now show more information, with battery-level data for Bluetooth-connected devices including the Pixel Buds, plus contextual reminders about features like alarms, where it will recommend you turn it off if it’s a national holiday the next day. It’ll also send important notifications like earthquake warnings specific for your own area. These are all available as widgets. Included in the update are three wallpapers for International Women’s Day that have been created by U.K. artist Manjit Thapp.
Gboard custom stickers
When you type messages using Gboard in U.S. English, you’ll see suggestions for stickers related to your text to help make your conversations more visually interesting. It doesn’t state whether this is available in just one app, so we assume it’ll be available across the board.
Live Captions
For those who don’t want to -- or are in a situation where they cannot -- speak when on a call, the Live Caption feature will help. During a call, captions of what’s being said by the other party will appear on the screen, and your typed responses will be read out loud. Again, Google doesn’t state whether this needs to be supported by your carrier, so we’ll assume it’ll be available for all.
Snapchat gets Night Sight
Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro owners who use Snapchat will get to use the camera’s Night Sight mode in the app itself. Google’s Night Sight camera is excellent and its lowlight photos are stunning. Not having to import them to Snapchat will increase usefulness and avoid any quality downgrades.
Interpreter Mode
Interpreter Mode is part of Live Translate, and works on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The latest feature to arrive adds Spanish, Italian, and French translations on to your device, so you can carry out live conversations with translation in real time. All you need to do is say, “Hey Google, be my French interpreter,” and the feature will activate. Also on the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, Spanish is now one of the live translations available for video and other media.

Reddit is getting more interactive with new real-time features for mobile
Reddit app icon.

Reddit fans should soon feel more connected with their fellow Redditors, thanks to a handful of new real-time features that the service is rolling out today. You’ll now be able to see upvotes, downvotes, and comments all changing as they happen, without needing to refresh or visit the thread. Not only will the numbers change right away, but you’ll also see a nice animation to bring it to your attention.

Comment counts will also get the same treatment, increasing as soon as someone shares a new comment, while typing indicators will also now pop up when two or more Redditors are writing comments at the same time. This will be shown via anonymized avatars, so you won’t know who is typing until they actually share their post, but you’ll at least have an idea of how many others are crafting their own responses.
