Fluance unveils shockingly cheap surround sound speaker setup for $200

It’s something a lot of people have experienced: the sound coming from that otherwise sterling new TV on the wall is lackluster, but who can afford to double down and spend the same price or more on a surround sound setup? Fluance has offered a tantalizing solution to this conundrum with the new AV5HTB Dynamic Home Theater Surround Sound Speaker System, unveiled today at a bargain-basement price of just $200 — for the entire 5-speaker setup.

The system is comprised of two bookshelf speakers, timbre matched surround speakers and a center channel speaker. For a full 5.1 surround sound setup you’ll have to do some shopping for a subwoofer and a receiver, but the value here is still impressive. All five speakers are constructed with audio-grade MDF woof cabinets designed to suppress cabinet resonance for distortion-free sound.

Laid into the cabinets are “high-performance drivers,” including 5-inch midrange drivers in the bookshelves, and 4-inch woofers in both the center channel and the surrounds, complemented by 1-inch silk dome tweeters. The company says the speakers are intended for both movie lovers and music fans, so the poor music performance that often appears in lower-priced surround sound systems hopefully won’t be a problem here.

The speakers look as stylish as anything you’ll get at twice the price, sporting an aesthetic that’s much classier than most budget-oriented surround sound offerings, with a black ash wood finish that should fit well in most living rooms. The front grill on each speaker is also removable, a touch not often seen at this price.

The services offered alongside the speakers are unusually robust considering the low price, as well. Not only does Fluance offer a lifetime parts and labor manufacturer’s direct warranty for the AV5 system, but prospective buyers can try the speakers for a full 30 days in the comfort of their own home. Those eyeing a sound bar, or other budget friendly alternative may just want to snatch these speakers up and give them a try.

The Fluance AV5HTB Dynamic Home Theater Surround Sound Speaker System is available now via the company’s website.

Wiim reveals Ultra streamer pricing and unleashes the Amp Pro
Wiim Ultra.

As promised, Wiim has officially taken the wraps off its new network music streamer, the Wiim Ultra -- a slick aluminum device with a color touchscreen, physical volume knob, and a dedicated, front-facing 3.5mm headphone output. We also now know the price: It will be $329 when it hits Amazon sometime between July 1 and September 30.

Wiim also promised that it would reveal another new device, and it turns out to be the Wiim Amp Pro, a beefed-up version of the highly rated Wiim Amp that launched earlier this year. It will sell for $369 when it arrives on Amazon around the same time as the Ultra.

The 10 most popular streaming services, ranked by subscriber count
The Netflix home screen.

Let's start this with a caveat or two: If you're going to compare streaming services merely by the number of subscribers they have, it's not exactly a fair fight. Not all services are available in the same places. Nor does the number of subscribers really address the "worth" of a streaming service. Or whether it's easy to use, or if the apps are any good. Or, for that matter, if a given streaming service has what you want to watch, which really is the only measure necessary.

Still, it's interesting to keep up with how things are doing from a global perspective, especially when you have relatively young upstarts like Apple TV+ gaining so many accolades in an industry dominated by Netflix.
