Check out pictures of the newly unveiled Cadillac ELR extended-range electric vehicle which features cutting edge fuel efficiency and an elegant design.

Cadillac, synonymous with Luxury ? Yes. Synonymous with extended-range electric vehicles? Not so much. All that could change however with the introduction of the Cadillac ELR. The evolution of the Cadillac Converj concept car to the Cadillac ELR production car is Cadillac’s attempt at a luxury coupe with extended-range electric vehicle technology.

Because the development of the ELR is in its initial phases, not too many details are available at this time, with Cadillac opting to announce more later. What we do know for the time being is the ELR will feature an electric propulsion system, comprised of a T-shaped lithium ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator. The primary source fueling the car just so happens to be…you guessed it, electricity, which in turn allows for the absence of gasoline consumption and tailpipe emissions. At the point that the battery engine begins to run low, the ELR switches to extended-range mode allowing for the vehicle to travel for hundreds of additional miles.

Cadillac is no stranger to redefining itself, with a series of ambitious and innovative cars that have done well for the company in recent times. Will the Cadillac ELR be added to that list? With the introduction of forward-thinking technology and engineering, Cadillac are certainly hoping so.

These cars were big disapointments for the Cadillac brand. I'm not sure they can pull it off this time either. Maybe a stylish, hybrid electric Buick coupe or Chevy coupe? What occurs to me is that the Cadillac brand will allow them to have a higher price point, which may be required in order to turn a profit. It will be many years before the Volt turns a profit. Maybe never.
