Trends with Benefits: Behind the scenes at CES, VR porn, Comcast’s covert ads

The DT gang is finally back from Las Vegas, and ready to digest some more of what went on at CES 2016, including our Top Tech of CES 2016 award winner and the emergence of VR porn. Oh, CES 2016 definitely had that.

Cars took over CES 2016 was unique this year, and they conquered our awards, too. Digital Trends’ Top Tech of CES 2016 award went to Chevy’s affordable new EV, the Bolt. It’s both a great technological achievement, and a potential market changer. At $30,000 after rebates, this is car normal people can finally afford, and are definitely going to want.

Virtual reality was also well represented at CES this year, and the same brands we saw last year now produce headsets that look better than ever. Unsurprisingly, the adult industry is at the forefront of content development for this platform. Brad attended a cocktail party that showcased this and gave us a behind-the-scenes account of how it all went down.

Not surprisingly, Comcast is once again in the news, and not in a good way. If you use your own modem, instead of renting one, Comcast is now inserting ads into your browser. Boo! Hiss! Our unanimous opinions on this are probably pretty similar to yours.

For streaming content, The CW Network is following suit with many content providers and considering launching a standalone app. It’s somewhat forward thinking, but does CW have the audience to pull it off?

Finally, Caleb gives everyone a valuable tip on where to find the best “people watching” in Las Vegas. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Today’s episode features Jeffrey Van Camp, Nick Mokey, Caleb Denison, Brad Bourque and Greg Nibler. Please subscribe and share Trends with Benefits, and send in your questions to podcast@digitaltrends.com. We also broadcast the show live on Periscope.

SpaceX has reinvigorated space exploration: There can be no doubt that putting a cherry red Tesla Roadster into space, as part of the Falcon Heavy X rocket launch on 2/ 5/18, captured the world's attention. It showcased what vision, ability, talent and a whole lot of money, can accomplish. The question now is what will Elon Musk do next? One would imagine that investors are clamoring to pour more money into future projects. This was also the world's greatest ad campaign for Tesla, for which there are some pretty bold plans in their own right. A letter was sent to shareholders stating that they are planning to send an autonomous Tesla car on a coast-to-coast trip in 2018.

Spotify vs. Apple: When it comes to overall users, there is no question that Spotify is the current leader in streaming music services. They have millions more subscribers (approximately 70 million total) than their closest rivals. However, Apple Music is now claiming to have 36 million of their own and according to the Wall Street Journal, is growing at nearly double the rate of Spotify. So, who do you use for streaming music and why?

Forget selfies and sunsets, any ordinary iPhone can be used to take pictures of something far more intriguing: the spirit world.

Julie Rieger is the biggest of Hollywood bigwigs; she’s president, chief data strategist, and head of media at 20th Century Fox, where she’s worked on a few little films like Avatar, Deadpool, The Fault in Our Stars, and more. And in addition to being one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, she’s an avid ghost photographer -- in fact, she wrote the book on it.
