In her father’s footsteps: Next generation of ‘Magnum, P.I.’ in the works at ABC

ABC is ready for the next generation of Magnum, P.I. in more ways than one. The network has a sequel to the popular 1980s crime drama series in the works, and with it comes a new Magnum taking on cases in Hawaii. The follow-up project centers on Thomas Magnum’s daughter, Lily, reports Deadline.

Called Magnum, the sequel plans to follow Lily (whose nickname is somehow “Tommy”) Magnum as she heads back to Hawaii to take over the private investigation firm headed up by her father in the original series. She’ll work with a group of friends to investigate international crime in the beautiful setting, including the failed spy operation that brought an end to her Navy career. Like its predecessor, the project is intended to be full of action and entertainment.

Leverage creator John Rogers is writing the script and executive producing alongside Eva Longoria, Ben Spector, and Jennifer Court. Universal TV is the studio. Apparently, the creators agreed that it would be impossible to find someone to fill the huge shoes of Tom Selleck, the actor who played the titular private eye for eight seasons on CBS.

“We knew no one could replace the iconic role of Thomas Magnum, so John decided to make the reboot a sequel and continue the adventure of a Magnum — his daughter, who was established in the original series,” Longoria and Spector told Deadline.

Although Lily appeared in just four episodes of Magnum, P.I., she was there for the end of the series. Thomas Magnum assumed responsibility for his daughter after her mother and stepfather died. With Magnum, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of relationship they ended up developing and what kind of impact he had on her. There’s no word yet on whether Selleck will appear on the show, but we’re definitely hoping he’ll pop up, if only to say, “I know what you’re thinking…”

The project has a script commitment plus substantial penalty, according to Deadline. It still remains to be seen if it will wind up on TV — and if so, how it will measure up to its beloved predecessor.

The best movies on Amazon Prime Video (May 2024)
Nicholas Galitzine and Anne Hathaway in The Idea of You.

Amazon Prime Video is starting off strong in May with several new additions to its library of movies, including the premiere of the original romantic drama The Idea of You. Last year's underrated Christmas drama The Holdovers is also now streaming on Prime Video. And as far as we're concerned, a good drama is never out of season.

Prime Video lost a handful of movies at the end of April, and Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza is only sticking around through the end of the weekend. But everything else on our list of the best movies on Amazon Prime Video right now is still available. Just keep reading, and you can make plans to watch any of the films that you want to see this month.

The 50 best movies on Netflix right now (May 2024)
Jenna Ortega in Miller's Girl.

It should come as no surprise that this year's hit rom-com Anyone But You has a stranglehold on the top slot of the list of the most popular movies on Netflix. But it is somewhat surprising to see Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver completely disappear from the list. That's going to make Rebel Moon – Part Three very unlikely to happen, and it may even discourage Netflix from committing extremely high budgets to its original sci-fi movies.

More tellingly, two of this week's new additions are modestly budget dramas: Miller's Girl and The Judge. The former features Wednesday's Jenna Ortega, while the latter has great lead performances by Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall. So it's not a mystery as to why both of those films are two of the top performers of the week.

MCU’s Fantastic Four: release date, trailer, cast, plot
The cast of "The Fantastic Four."

It's not a coincidence that one of the first Marvel movies announced after Disney purchased 20th Century Fox's entertainment assets in 2019 was a new reboot of The Fantastic Four. In 1961, Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby launched the Marvel Universe as we know it with Fantastic Four #1, and it was the comic that set the tone for everything that came after.

Because the rights to the Fantastic Four were tied up at Fox for the better part of two decades, FF supporting players like Silver Surfer were withheld from the MCU. Now that the characters are firmly under Marvel Studios' control, the sky's the limit for the upcoming reboot. And we're here to share everything we know about The Fantastic Four so far.
Who has been cast in The Fantastic Four?
