Staying hydrated may be good for you, but if that hydration involves using thousands of plastic bottles, it may not be so good for the planet. Luckily, there’s a solution that will keep you healthy without destroying the planet — meet Bevi, a smart water cooler providing eco-friendly drinks that are deliciously environmentally friendly.

As per the Institute for Sustainable Communication, some 10.5 million tons of plastic waste are generated every single year in the U.S., but at most, just 2 percent of this waste is recycled. And the workplace tends to be one of the biggest offenders when it comes to creating that waste — after all, just think of the number of water bottles scattered about the various conference rooms in your office.

But Boston-based startup Bevi hopes to address that issue with its smart beverage cooler in a plastic-free and eco-friendly manner. The smart office cooler is capable of customizing 15 flavored water creations using steamed fruits, with choices ranging from Orange Mango to Blueberry Cucumber for thirsty workers, encouraging them to drink more water from a glass rather than grabbing a plastic bottle or can. Already, Bevi estimates that its cooler, which can be found in Netflix, Lyft, Soul Cycle, and Thrillist offices, has saved over four million plastic bottles from the landfill. And now, Bevi is looking to expand into other markets, including Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and Austin, Texas.

“We believe that our smart water cooler has the potential to truly disrupt the way employees think about drinking water. The hope is that we can help inspire behavioral change and encourage more sustainable habits in the workplace, whilst also offering great drink choices to keep people hydrated during the day,” said Sean Grundy, CEO at Bevi. “It’s been incredible to see that dream becoming a reality, and to witness the environmental impact every single day. Some of our customers used to burn through thousands of plastic water bottles per week, and have replaced refrigerators stocked full of disposable bottles with Bevi units.”

Bevi’s smart water cooler also features a connected interface, allowing companies and individuals alike to track their environmental impact (or lack thereof) with the smart water cooler. So if you’re looking for ways to go green, you may want to start with this cooler.

How to use motion sensors for smart lights outdoors

Smart lights are a great way to enhance home security. Being able to flip on the lights remotely or automatically, you can give the impression that someone is home and expose potential intruders. It's possible to link your smart lights to outdoor motion sensors so that they flip on as soon as it detects any motion. Let's take a look into how it all works.
Can you put motion sensors outside?
There are absolutely motion sensors that are meant to work outside. Many smart home doorbells and security cameras have built-in motion sensors that can connect to your smart lights.  The one catch is that since motion sensors need to communicate with lights, they need a power source. This source can be wired, or battery-driven. For example, Hue offers a battery-powered motion sensor that can activate your home's lights when triggered.
Can you add a motion detector to an existing light?
Yes, there are add-on motion sensors that you can attach to existing lights.

The easiest way to install a new motion sensor to an existing outdoor light is to use a light socket adapter. You would place the adapter between your current light bulb and your socket. You don't have to worry about handling any wiring. It also means you don't need to upgrade to smart lights to provide motion activation since the socket adapter handles the triggering. This socket adapter from Wyze is especially promising.
How do you wire a motion sensor to an existing outdoor light?
Specific instructions for wiring up a motion sensor will vary by brand. Be sure to check the manufacturer's instructions on specifics. If you aren't using a socket adapter and will need to do the wiring, here are the general steps.
