Word of the Year: Twitter

Doesn’t seem like 2009 is actually over yet, but the folks at the Global Language Monitor have unveiled their top word list for 2009—and the one word to rule them all seems to be “Twitter.”

“In a year dominated by world-shaking political events, a pandemic, the after effects of a financial tsunami, and the death of a revered pop icon, the word Twitter stands above all the other words,” Global Language MOnitor president Paul JJ Payack wrote in a statement.

Twitter, of course, is a popular microblogging service that enables users to post 140 character updates about what they’re thinking, doing, and reading. The service has an API so users can coordinate Twitter updates via Facebook and other social networking services, and a myriad of client applications let users tap into (and follow) Twitter via computers, mobile phones, and other devices.

The runners up for the top word of 2009 were “Obama,” “H1N1,” “stimulus,” “vampire,” “2.0” (as in Web 2.0), “deficit,” “hadron,” and “healthcare.” The top phrase for the year was “King of Pop,” referring to Michael Jackson. The top name for the year was “Obama.”

The Global Language Monitor determines its word lists using a proprietary algorithm in its Predictive Quantities Indicator, which scans words and phrases in the media and on the Internet, gauging their frequency, context, and both long-term and short-term shifts in usage. The analysis now includes things like blogs and social media.

Back in June, the Global Language Monitor dubbed “Web 2.0” the millionth word in the English language.

More than a year later, Ring Always Home Cam goes on sale through invite system
The Ring Always Home Cam and its charging dock.

It's been over a year since we got our first look at the Ring Always Home Cam, the home security drone by Ring. Although information has been scarce, Amazon has finally provided a little bit more news: Namely that the Ring Always Home Cam will be available through an invitation system.

Ring has put out a video detailing more information about the drone and showing it in action. In the video, the user carries the drone through the home, showing it specific areas and setting up manual flight paths for it to follow. It seems that users will be able to create specific paths for it to patrol through the house, but you can also send it to specific rooms to check things out.

The outlet is over 100 years old, and it needs a redesign for the smart home
Swidget Customizable Outlet

The modern electrical system in homes just doesn't make sense anymore. I can't stand it when I have to plug in a massive power brick that dominates an entire outlet; it just means I have to go out and spend more money on a power strip.

An early version of the American electrical plug and socket was patented in 1904, and its basic design has remained relatively consistent since then. The home has not. Standardized electrical circuits, television, home theater systems, and so much more have become staples in our day-to-day life, but we're still working with a basic concept that was designed over 100 years ago. It's time for the outlet to catch up to the 21st century.
