Dancing with the Stars is moving to Disney+ this fall

Usually, the only time a network TV show makes the jump to streaming is after it has been canceled. But Dancing With the Stars is following its own path to the streaming realm. Disney has announced that Dancing with the Stars is leaving ABC after 30 seasons and moving to Disney+ this fall.

The reality competition show features professional dancers paired with celebrities in a multi-week bid to win the top prize. Dancing with the Stars made its debut on ABC in 2015, and the network has been able to produce multiple seasons per year. While the series was no longer at the top of the ratings, it was a perennial well-performing show for ABC. The Disney+ pickup is for at least two additional seasons of the series.

To fill the newfound gap in its schedule, Disney-owned ABC is turning to Monday Night Football in the fall, a return of the franchise after it was solely available on ESPN for over a decade. After the fall, ABC plans to use the Monday night 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. slot to “develop and invest in new and future programming.”

In a new statement, Disney Media and Entertainment chairman Kareem Daniel said “Dancing with the Stars has entertained fans for 16 years on ABC, and we are excited to bring this beloved show exclusively to Disney+ as the platform’s first-ever live series. The show’s broad appeal, as well as the overwhelming popularity of its Disney-themed competition nights, make Disney+ the perfect home for Dancing with the Stars while continuing to expand our demographic reach.”

At the moment, Disney+ hasn’t announced which celebrities will participate in the new season of Dancing with the Stars when it makes its streaming debut this fall.

When Andor premiered one year ago this week, the general response to its first three episodes, which all dropped on Disney+ at the same time, was … interesting. While everyone seemed to welcome the Rogue One prequel with open arms and positive reviews, some were quick to express their concerns over the show’s pace. On the one hand, it’s not hard to see why. Andor's first three installments essentially serve as both the series' inciting incident and its prologue.

The show’s opening chapters split their time between flashbacks to Cassian Andor’s (Diego Luna) traumatic childhood on the war-torn planet of Kenari and the present-day fallout of his impulsive decision to kill a pair of Imperial-adjacent officials. It isn’t until the end of Andor’s third episode that his backstory has been fully fleshed out and he’s actually left his adoptive planet of Ferrix with Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård), the rebel leader who will jumpstart Cassian’s own radicalization. On paper, that might make it seem very little happens across Andor’s first three episodes.

Disney+ and Hulu set Hallowstream and Huluween 2023 schedules

Technically, Halloween arrives at the end of October. But Disney+ and Hulu aren't waiting around to start rolling out the Halloween programing. For the sixth year in a row, Hulu will launch its Huluween slate of programming. Huluween will kick off tomorrow, September 15, with the Hulu premiere of Marvel's Werewolf by Night. The Boogeyman, a Stephen King adaptation that was originally slated as a Hulu original, will finally arrive at its intended destination on October 6. Stephen King's Rose Red is also on the schedule, alongside a number of Hulu originals and classic shows. There's even a four-episode event for American Horror Stories.

Disney+ is holding off a little longer for the launch of its fourth annual Hallowstream. This year's event begins on October 4 with the Disney+ premiere of Haunted Mansion and continues on October 13 with a new Goosebumps series that will also stream on Hulu. On October 20, Werewolf by Night will be getting a rerelease in color for the first time. However, most of the programming that Disney+ listed for October 31 are things that the streamer already has, like The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Collection.
