Uncharted 3 to make use of PSN Pass for online play

In a move that should surprise absolutely no one, Sony has confirmed that Naughty Dog‘s upcoming Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception will use the company’s PSN Pass system to enable the game’s online play. The info comes from Sony España Software Manager Juan Jiménez, speaking in an interview to Spanish-language outlet The Vault (via Joystiq).

Online passes have become increasingly common over the past year or two, with game publishers finally figuring out that there’s money to be made from the secondhand market. Used game sales are a constant headache for those who make and distribute video games, since any money made from them belongs to the reseller. An online pass restricts access to a game’s multiplayer features, requiring players to enter in a redemption code in order to activate the content. Each copy of an online pass-enabled game ships with a code, which forces buyers of used copies to purchase that code separately from their digital marketplace of choice.

Uncharted 3 is only the second game from Sony to use the PSN Pass. The first was Resistance 3, which was released in early September. Jiménez expects that we’ll be seeing plenty more of the PSN Pass in releases to come, so you might as well get used to it.
