AT&T Answers the Call of the Garmin-Asus nuvifone G60

G60Garmin and AT&T have announced that the Garmin-Asus nüvifone G60 will be available in the U.S. beginning October 4, bringing not only voice and mobile Internet capabilities, but the full suite of navigation and guidance capabilities that Garmin packs into its high-end GPS navigation systems. The unit’s embedded maps of North American mean users can get turn-by-turn directions wherever they got, and integrated Wi-Fi, full HTML Web browsing, and a 3 megapixel camera help the G60 keep up with the rest of the cool smartphones.

“The nüvifone weaves location into nearly every facet of its functionality making it ideal for people who depend on location to navigate everyday life,” said Garmin president and COO Cliff Pemble, in a statement. “The nüvifone has Garmin’s easy-to-use interface, so navigating to a meeting directly from its calendar or contacts pages, or geotagging an email or photograph with a location stamp, is intuitive, useful, and fun.”

The G60 will come pre-loaded with maps and an extensive point-of-interest database for North America, and can easily be mounted in a vehicles for use as a portable navigation device. The G560 incorporates a full GPS receiver with Garmin’s HotFix technology for rapidly acquiring location data, and offers a “Where am I?” feature so users can quickly get information on the nearest hospital, police station, gas stations, intersections, and addresses with a single touch. And for folks using it as an in-vehicle system, the G60 will remember where it was when it was removed from a windshield mount, making it easy to get back to the car later.

The G60 also includes a full HTML Web browser so users can connect to the Internet using either AT&T’s 3G network or available Wi-FI hotspots. The phone also features a virtual QWERTY keyboard (with predictive text input), a 3 megapixel camera (and, naturally, geo-tagging capabilities for photos).

What does all this cost? $299 with a two-year service agreement, and that’s after a $100 mail-in rebate. In addition, users who want Nüvifone Premium Connected Services—for real-time traffic information, white pages, weather, fuel prices, plus local event and movie listings will pay an additional $5.99 per month—on top of voice and data plan charges—after an initial 30-day trial period.

I replaced my Apple Watch with a Garmin — and I don’t want to go back
Apple Watch Series 7 next to the Garmin Forerunner 265.

The Apple Watch has been my go-to wearable for years. I began my journey with the Apple Watch Series 1 in 2017, upgraded to the Apple Watch Series 4 shortly after it launched, and then jumped to the Apple Watch Series 7 in 2021. It's long been my smartwatch platform of choice, and I've never had any desire to switch to something else.

At least, that's what I thought before I began using a Garmin smartwatch. I started testing the Garmin Forerunner 265 earlier this year, and I went into it with a pretty clear plan: I'd wear the watch for a couple of weeks, write my review, and move back to the Apple Watch. Fast forward to now, and my Garmin Forerunner 265 review has been published, no further testing is required, and nothing is stopping me from returning to my Apple Watch. But here's the thing — I don't want to. Garmin's watch is so good that I have no desire to put the Apple Watch back on my wrist, and there are a few big reasons why.

Here’s another big reason why T-Mobile 5G dominates AT&T and Verizon
T-Mobile smartphone.

T-Mobile continues to command a massive lead in offering the best 5G experience among U.S. carriers. A few weeks ago, a report from Ookla revealed that T-Mobile is leaving its rivals in the dust; now Opensignal has confirmed that not only is the Un-carrier’s lead increasing in raw speeds, but it’s leading the way in taking 5G into the mainstream.

According to Opensignal’s latest 5G Experience Report, T-Mobile not only offers the fastest 5G experience in the U.S. by a sizeable margin but on average, customers on T-Mobile spend nearly 50% of their time on the carrier’s 5G network.

T-Mobile is leaving AT&T and Verizon in the 5G dust
The T-Mobile logo on a smartphone.

Ookla has just published its latest market report revealing where U.S. mobile carriers and smartphone manufacturers stand in terms of providing the best 5G and 4G/LTE services.

Not surprisingly, T-Mobile remained in the top spot during the fourth quarter of 2022, eclipsing its rivals when it comes to median download speeds. What may be more surprising is that T-Mobile has increased its lead, clocking in at 151.37Mbps overall and 216.56Mbps for 5G, breaking the 200Mbps barrier for median 5G speeds across all bands for the first time.
