Yahoo Buys Video Mashup Site Jumpcut

Internet titan Yahoo has decided it wants to get further into the world of user-generated digital video by acquiring video editing and mashup site Jumpcut.

Launched back in early 2006, Jumpcut enables users to edit and piece together video using a Flash-based interface. Would-be video bloggers, film buffs, and aspiring cinematographers can apply filters, transitions, effects, cuts, and titles to their video, plus remix videos available via the Jumpcut site and create their own original content. Jumpcut currently supports videos of up to 50 MB in size in a variety of common formats, and enables users to restrict access to video or make it public to the whole Jumpcut community. Public videos can be picked up by other Jumpcut user as fodder for their own remixes and mashups, although owners can flag their videos as ineligible for remixing.

Yahoo hasn’t said what it plans to do with Jumpcut, but if the pattern of other Yahoo acquisitions is any indication, Jumpcut services will be rebranded and then integrated into existing Yahoo offerings.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
