Check out our review of the LG G Pro 2 smartphone.

During the coming year we’re going to hear plenty about 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution screens, which are all set to supersede the 1920 x 1080 pixel panels which grace the majority of today’s high-end Android smartphones. LG has been talking up its 1440p screens for a while, and the latest rumor suggests it’ll announce its first example at Mobile World Congress at the end of February.

According to a Korean news source, LG will fit a Quad HD screen to the LG G Pro 2, and that’s the phone expected to come at MWC. Soon after that, LG will unleash the LG G3 smartphone with another 1440p screen, meaning its two top-of-the-range smartphones for 2014 will wear the very latest screen tech.

LG announced the Optimus G Pro at last year’s show, so to update it this year fits in with the usual annual refresh cycle. In addition to the higher resolution, LG may increase the size of the screen to 5.9-inches, compared to the 5.5-inches on the G Pro. The report doesn’t provide any information on the processor, camera, or any other specifications.

A few months later, apparently on May 17, LG will supposedly launch the G3 smartphone. This sounds less likely than the G Pro 2’s arrival, as in May the G2 will be less than a year old, and hardly a technological dinosaur. Again, no other specs are mentioned, although the 1440p screen may be enlarged to 5.5-inches. A previous rumor put the G3’s launch at Mobile World Congress, and indicated it would come with a 1440p screen, plus a fingerprint scanner and an octa-core processor.

LG made some serious headway in the smartphone world during 2013, with great hardware such as the G2 and the G Flex, allowing it to close the gap to rival Samsung. The threat of the Galaxy S5 still looms large, and if these specs and release dates prove to be correct, LG’s coming into 2014 with all guns blazing to combat it.
