Detailed by the Washington Post, the United States Postal Service will be rolling out a new stamp during 2015 that pays tribute to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Currently under development within the design department at the postal service, the Steve Jobs stamp was discovered on a leaked list of planned stamps covering the next two years. While the list doesn’t include exact dates for the release of the stamps, the announcement of new stamps is usually kept private up until a few months before the stamp is actually ready.
Steve Jobs is the only tech-related icon on the list, but there are a number of popular figures on the list that include Johnny Carson, Wilt Chamberlain, Harvey Milk, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, former President George W. Bush and Michael Jackson.
There’s also a significant number of stamps related to animated characters and shows such as Peanuts, Dora the Explorer and Hanna-Barbera. In addition, there are tributes to some tech related topics such as video games and science fiction writers as well as from general themes like Stop Bullying or Stroke Awareness.
Susan McGowan, USPS executive director for stamp services and corporate licensing, told the Washington Post “It will be very interesting to see what the American public thinks of the stamps under consideration. I’m sure people are going to be vocal about it.” The move into pop culture topics and popular figures is a recent shift in order to make the USPS more relevant to the younger generation. McGowan encouraged the public to leave comments about the Steve Jobs stamp and other planned stamps on the official USPS Facebook page. However, it’s likely that anyone interested in the Steve Jobs stamp will have to wait until the end of the year to actually view the new design.
