Edge Light in macOS 26 Tahoe is Apple’s trick for making your dark-room calls watchable

macOS 26.2 adds a screen-border glow that adapts to your framing, works with Studio Display and external webcams, and stays out of your way.

What’s happened? Apple is adding a new video effect called Edge Light in macOS Tahoe 26.2 that aims to fix ugly, low-light calls. Instead of a physical ring light, your Mac’s display becomes the light source that brightens your face on camera.

  • As spotted by 9to5Mac, Edge Light sits in the same video effects menu as Portrait mode, Studio Light, Reactions, and Backgrounds.
  • It wraps a soft glow around the edges of your screen, which shows up as more flattering light on your face in video apps.
  • The Neural Engine and Image Signal Processor work together so the effect understands your framing and adjusts intensity instead of blasting one static level.
  • If your pointer creeps toward the edges, the glow backs off so you can still see and click what you need.

This is important because: Lighting is usually the weakest part of a home setup, and most people are not about to rebuild their workspace for better calls. Edge Light meets you where you are, in a messy room or dark corner, and cleans up the image.

  • Using the screen as a light source gives you a closer, more even glow than a lamp on the other side of the room.
  • Because it runs on Apple Silicon, the effect can react to your position and surroundings instead of staying locked at one brightness.
  • It works on all Apple Silicon Macs and Studio Display, and newer 2024 models can flip Edge Light on automatically when macOS decides the room is too dark.

Why should I care? If your job, classes, or social life live in Zoom and FaceTime, this is free camera polish that does not add clutter. Once you switch it on, you get more consistent lighting without thinking about it.

  • The effect works systemwide, so your look stays similar whether you are on FaceTime, Zoom, WebEx, or a browser-based call.
  • Docked setups are covered too, since Edge Light also supports Studio Display and external webcams, not just MacBook lids.
  • If you like actual hardware lighting instead of relying on software tricks, check the best ring lights out now.

Okay, so what’s next? Edge Light lands with macOS Tahoe 26.2, and the real question is how quickly it becomes part of people’s default setup. For a lot of users, it is likely something you turn on once, then forget about.

  • After you install macOS 26.2, it’s worth jumping into the video effects menu and testing Edge Light alongside Apple’s other tools to see what mix feels natural.
  • If you are running a Studio Display or an external camera, Edge Light gives you a quick way to make that desk rig look closer to a small studio, even if everything else is pure chaos.

Asus’ latest Zenbook puts a seriously bright OLED screen inside an impossibly slim body
The Zenbook 14 Air is only 11mm thick but still packs a 77Wh battery
Computer, Electronics, Laptop

Asus has introduced a new AMD-powered version of the Zenbook 14 Air 2026, combining a bright OLED display and a large battery inside an 11mm-thick chassis. It weighs 1.19kg, keeping it firmly in ultraportable territory despite the 77Wh battery inside.

The Zenbook 14 Air 2026 itself is not entirely new. Asus launched an Intel configuration powered by the Core Ultra 9 386H in China back in January. The latest version switches to AMD’s Ryzen AI 7 H 445 and is priced at CNY 9,999, or around $1,477. (via Notebookcheck)

Before you blow your student budget, here’s the MacBook that actually suits your major
Confused by the MacBook lineup? I sorted it out so students don't have to
Computer, Electronics, Laptop

Apple’s MacBook lineup has become much broader in 2026. The MacBook Neo brings the entry price down considerably, the M5 MacBook Air remains the obvious all-rounder, and the MacBook Pro covers students whose coursework can push a laptop to its limits.

But with a wide range, choosing one becomes harder. Spending more can bring a better display, faster storage, additional ports, and considerably greater performance. However, plenty of students will never take advantage of those upgrades. So, I have narrowed the current lineup down to three models, each aimed at a distinct kind of buyer.

The new Qualcomm Snadragon 8 Elite Gen 5

I want you to sit with this for a second.
