Spartacus showrunner takes over Marvel’s Daredevil series for Netflix

It’s been a busy bunch of days for the people tasked with bringing Marvel’s on-screen universe to life. Just a little while after Marvel announced that director Edgar Wright had left the long-developing Ant-Man movie, the studio confirmed that its upcoming Daredevil series on Netflix had also parted ways with its showrunner, Drew Goddard.

Unlike the Ant-Man news, however, Marvel’s announcement of the change-up for Daredevil was accompanied by the news that Spartacus showrunner Steven S. DeKnight had taken over as the project’s executive producer and showrunner. Goddard had already written the first two episodes of the series and will remain involved as an executive producer.

According to Marvel.com, Goddard’s departure from the Netflix series was due to his attachment as writer and director on The Sinister Six, Sony’s upcoming villain-centric spinoff from The Amazing Spider-Man franchise.

DeKnight has made a name for himself as a writer, director, and producer of some acclaimed geek-friendly projects over the years, including the Smallville and Dollhouse television series’ and Buffy The Vampire Slayer spinoff Angel. Most recently, DeKnight served as creator and showrunner for Spartacus, the critically praised Starz television series that concluded its run in 2013.

Marvel’s Daredevil is currently scheduled to debut as a 13-episode series on Netflix in 2015.

A still from Dark Matter (2024) on Apple TV

Some of the best series on Apple TV have earned great reviews, yet none of them get talked about nearly as much as they deserve. That's why I have included three different genres in this weekend's binge list, which is based on a bestselling sci-fi novel, a beloved wine manga, and a true-crime memoir. The best part is that each one of these shows manages to outdo its source material's reputation on the screen.
