AT&T finally admits the iPhone 18 Pro Max has an SOS problem, but there’s no real fix yet

The fix doesn't seem to be solving the issue.

iPhone 18 Pro Max owners have spent two weeks watching SOS flash across their status bar instead of actual AT&T bars.

AT&T broke its silence today with a statement confirming the issue, though its fix so far doesn’t seem to be working.

What’s actually going wrong?

Affected phones lose AT&T connectivity for calls, texts, and data, either on and off or constantly, pushing the phone into SOS mode.

Reports about the issue date back to September 25, 2026, a week after launch. Many users have described it across Reddit and Apple’s support forums as well.

Here’s the detail that stood out to me: the US iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone using a Qualcomm modem. The smaller Pro and the iPhone Duo run Apple’s own C2 chip everywhere else. Neither AT&T nor Apple has confirmed that, though.

Does AT&T’s fix work?

AT&T is asking customers to update to iOS 27.0.1 immediately. The carrier is messaging people directly. However, Apple’s release notes mention only Face ID and camera fixes; they say nothing about cellular problems.

Not exactly the launch experience you want from a $1,200+ iPhone. 😬

AT&T says it’s working with Apple on the iPhone 18 Pro Max cellular issues, but some users are still reporting problems even after updating to iOS 27.0.1.

Unfortunately, early reports suggest the update doesn’t fix the issue for people who were facing it. Some customers say their warranty replacement requests got denied outright. An alleged internal AT&T email says the guidance is really about limiting future impact rather than solving anything today.

@Apple @ATT my new iPhone 18 pro max keeps dropping my cellular service and staying in SOS mode. This is making me regret upgrading! When will this issue be resolved? Neither of these companies have been any help with this! Anyone else struggling with this??

If you bought your Pro Max on launch day, today is also your last chance to return it under Apple’s standard 14-day window. If you’re facing the issue, you might want to go to the store right now.

For those catching up, AT&T first acknowledged the issue publicly on October 1, a week after reports started piling up online.

The Oppo Find X10 is ridiculously stacked, and I haven’t even got to the cameras yet
Oppo Find X10 has two 200MP cameras and absolutely zero interest in playing it safe
Oppo Find X10

Oppo had me genuinely jaw-dropped with the Find X9 Pro and Ultra. Those phones showed just how far smartphone technology could go when a manufacturer decided to stop playing it safe. And now, we have the Find X10 series, with Oppo seemingly in no mood to take its foot off the accelerator.

For this first impressions review, I have the vanilla Find X10, not to be confused with its more capable sibling, the Pro Max. There is no Ultra model announced yet, but fingers crossed on a China-only variant. Pricing is around $1,400 and at that pricing you would normally except something capable enough - and boy, Oppo has already started flexing.
