Saints Row 4 dev releases PC mod tools, hilarity to surely ensue

Saints Row 4 might have been released all the way back in August 2013, but that didn’t stop developer Deep Silver Volition from releasing software development tools for tech-savvy fans to use with the PC version of the game (via Joystiq). In layman’s terms, that means players now have the ability to create mods for the game, more advanced ones than the stuff we’ve seen so far.

Volition didn’t provide any timeline for the release of the mod tools (UPDATE: You can find them right here); it simply confirmed during its PAX Prime 2014 panel that a release is coming. Perhaps they’re coincide with the January 27 launches of Saints Row 4: Re-Elected, which brings the game to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell, a standalone expansion coming to PC and PlayStation/Xbox consoles.

Whatever the plan is, putting mod tools in the hands of players only stands to make the PC version of the game that much better. Saints Row 4 is lots of fun, but its replay value is limited once you’ve seen and unlocked everything. With fan-created add-ons, a whole new realm of play possibilities opens up.

The Saints Row series started life at what amounted to a Grand Theft Auto clone at a time before Grand Theft Auto IV launched, when players were hungry for open world games on their still-new PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. The series has matured over the years (in a manner of speaking), embracing the inherent silliness that the first game hinted at. In Saints Row 4, the leader of the Third Street Saints — now President of the United States — confronts an alien menace in a bid to save the planet.

A three person squad stands on a bridge in Ghost Recon Frontline.

If you're a Ghost Recon fan, you've probably gotten used to one thing over the past few years: waiting for rumors to turn into announcements, waiting for leaks to be acknowledged, waiting for Ubisoft to say... well, anything at all about the future of one of its biggest tactical shooter franchises. Thankfully, that silence finally seems to be ending.

Ubisoft has confirmed that it will share Ghost Recon news on August 6, when the series celebrates its 25th anniversary. The announcement arrived shortly after fresh leaks began circulating online, prompting the company to post a brief message telling fans that more information is just around the corner.

The AI game-dev boom has a dark side: fewer jobs for the people starting out
Solo creators are thriving with tools like Claude Code and Copilot, but entry-level game roles are disappearing.

AI is making it easier than ever for a single person to build a game. That sounds like a win for creativity, and in many ways, it absolutely is. But there is a catch. As generative AI tools help solo developers and small studios do more with fewer people, the same shift is making life tougher for writers, artists, concept creators, and junior programmers trying to break into the gaming industry.
