No Man’s Sky creator and others see an industry ‘Without Borders’ at D.I.C.E. 2015

Registration has opened for the Academy of Interactive Arts & Science’s 2015 D.I.C.E. (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain) Summit, which will be held from February 3-5, 2015. The first confirmed speakers are: Tracy Fullerton (experimental game designer, director of USC’s Game Innovation Lab), Tom Kalinske (Former CEO of Sega of America), Sean Murray (co-founder of Hello Games, currently working on No Man’s Sky) and Ru Weerasuriya (founder of Ready at Dawn Studios, currently developing The Order: 1886). They will lead the annual summit’s discourse on this year’s theme: “Without Borders”

“This theme kicked off at D.I.C.E. Europe in September as a starting point for discussion of the industry’s expanding culture, a culture that is seeing past barriers dissipate as we continue rapid growth and evolution,” explained AIAS president Martin Rae. “Our speakers will bring their own interpretation of this theme, focusing on the expanding opportunities for the interactive entertainment industry with an eye towards the global marketplace, technology, creativity, emerging markets, diversity, and more.”

The annual summit and awards program celebrates the interactive entertainment industry by bringing together voices from academia, journalism, and all elements of the design and publishing process to address broad questions of the art’s past, present, and future. D.I.C.E. 2015 will take place from February 3-5, 2015 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Last Vegas, culminating in the 18th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards on February 5. For years, Call of Duty’s campaign mode has used big, scripted set pieces to tell the overarching story amid all the adrenaline-pumping action. The 2023 Modern Warfare 3 tried to shake up the established formula by introducing a handful of short open combat missions, and I genuinely liked the idea, but the game's overall negative reception seeped into how those missions were received.

I feared the next iteration might abandon the idea because of the backlash, but I am glad it didn't. MW4’s “Stranded” mission uses the same approach, but instead of fragmenting it across the campaign, it puts it all in a single large-scale open-world mission.

Acer’s Predator Atlas 8 finally has a US release date and price, several months after the company first showed off the handheld in May. The highlight is the Intel Arc G3 Extreme chip inside, which has been adopted by only a couple of other consoles besides the Atlas 8. This version will go on sale exclusively at Best Buy on November 1 for $1,299.99.

Acer originally said the Atlas 8 would arrive in North America in October, but left pricing open at the time. The launch came amid the ongoing DRAM crunch, which has made memory more expensive across the PC industry and complicated pricing for hardware makers.
