What it lacks in looks, Fahlke’s Larea GT1 S12 makes up for with 1,242 hp

Supercars are always striving for some kind of superlative claim, and this one just might take the crown for most-awkward name.

Meet the Falhlke Larea GT1 S12, a new German effort unveiled at the 2014 Essen Motor Show. Its maker may have saddled it with a seemingly random combination of letters and numbers, but it also imbued this supercar with a claimed 1,242 horsepower.

That’s more than the 1,035 hp of the just-unveiled Ferrari LaFerrari FXX K, and just shy of the 1,341 hp of the Koenigsegg One:1.

That power comes courtesy of a supercharged 7.2-liter V8 that also puts out 1,180 pound-feet of torque. Falhke also says the Larea weighs just 2,000 pounds dry, giving it a better power-to-weight ratio than the Koenigsegg.

Not surprisingly, that makes for some mind-warping performance numbers. Fahlke claims a 0 to 62 mph time of just 2.0 seconds, a 0 to 124 time of 5.0 seconds, and an estimated top speed of over 250 mph.

However, to attain that performance you’ll have to sacrifice pretty much everything else.

The Larea GT1 S12 looks like an overgrown soapbox derby car and, judging by the nearly-bare interior, it’s probably not any more pleasant to drive.

Fahlke seems to follow in the footsteps of fellow German boutique carmaker Gumpert and others in building a barely-tamed track car for the road.

Still, if the GT1 S12 sounds a little too extreme, there are “base” models, including the 542-hp S7, 710-hp S9 Evo, and 990-hp S10 (in the video below).

On the other hand, Fahlke also says it’s cooking up new versions with up to 1,400 hp. Yikes.

Rivian R2 vs R1S: How will Rivian’s cheaper SUV compare?
The front three-quarter view of a 2022 Rivian against a rocky backdrop.

Rivian has finally unveiled the R2, its long-awaited attempt at a more affordable electric SUV. The new vehicle may not be available just yet, but fans of Rivian's design aesthetics and feature set are already looking forward to being able to order the new car. The R2 is targeted at being a more affordable take on the electric SUV and will sit alongside the flagship-tier R1S.

Let's get this out of the way right now: The R1S is most likely going to be a better vehicle than the R2. Rivian isn't replacing the R1S with the R2 — it's releasing the R2 as a more affordable alternative, and there will be some compromises when buying the R2 over the R1S.

Don’t let the gimmicks fool you. The Ioniq 5 N is a serious track car
2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N drifting.

We’re finally getting to the fun part of automakers’ methodical quest to replicate their lineups with electric cars.

Performance versions of ordinary cars have been a staple of the auto industry for decades. But while we’ve already seen some variants of EVs boasting more power and more impressive stats — think Tesla Model S Plaid or Lucid Air Sapphire — the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the first to truly apply that format to an EV.
