Dumbledore takes a different turn in J.K. Rowling’s dark new political miniseries

The Casual Vacancy: Trailer (HBO)
Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling is hard at work on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the prequel film set before the famous boy wizard’s adventures, but next month brings the U.S. premiere of another adaptation of her work — the HBO/BBC miniseries The Casual Vacancy. A trailer for that project is now available to watch online, offering a peek at the first story penned by Rowling after the Harry Potter series.

Set in a suburban English village named Pagford, The Casual Vacancy chronicles the dark secrets that emerge during an election to replace a local parish councillor following the councillor’s death. The novel — like the miniseries based on it — is said to be steeped in issues of class conflict and local politics that lurk behind the idyllic facade of the village as the divides between classes increase create rifts in the local population. Clashes between the rich and the poor, the teenagers and their parents, the wives and their husbands, and the teachers and their students are all explored.

The three-part miniseries is a joint production of the BBC and HBO, and stars Harry Potter alum Michael Gambon, who is joined by Keeley Hawes, Rory Kinnear, Monica Dolan, and Julia McKenzie. It’s directed by Jonny Campbell, who also directed several critically praised episodes of Doctor Who (including “Vincent and the Doctor”).

As far as the source material for the series, The Casual Vacancy was one of the most successful novels in the U.K. when it was released in 2012, and won the “Best Fiction” category in the Goodreads Choice Awards that same year. It went on to sell over one million English-language copies around the world, and was the 15th best-selling book of the year during its first week of release.

The first two parts of The Casual Vacancy will air Wednesday, April 29, at 8 p.m. ET on HBO. The concluding chapter will air the following night, April 30, at 8 p.m. ET.

Like Netflix’s hit series Dead Boy Detectives? Then watch these 3 shows right now
Two boys sit in an office in Dead Boy Detectives.

The task of finding another show to watch based on a show you just enjoyed watching can be more difficult than you might think. Streaming algorithms can be effective for some things, but definitely not for everything, and there's no guarantee that whatever you liked about one show will actually make an appearance in another.

If, for example, you were really into Netflix's Dead Boy Detectives, which follows two young ghosts as they solve crimes along with a clairvoyant, you may like it for any number of reasons, from its sense of humor to its flirtations with the afterlife. If you're looking for another show that offers something similar, then we've carefully curated three that should fit the bill and may have flown under your radar.

Juventus vs Milan live stream: Can you watch for free?
Massive open air soccer stadium with a game in play.

Juventus and Milan clash in a Top-3 Serie A showdown today at Allianz Stadium. Though the stakes are considerably lower now that Inter have officially claimed this season's Scudetto, this is still a compelling matchup between two of Italy's premier sides.

This one is starting very soon, at 12:00 p.m. ET. It will stream exclusively on Paramount+ in the United States, but we've found a handful of different ways you can watch the match live online for free.

Netflix is streaming the craziest action movie of 2024. Here’s why I loved it
A man floating in air kicks another man in the face in City Hunter.

This month seems to be the time to release action movies that color outside the lines. We've already had Dev Patel's Monkey Man, a messy, throw-everything-at-the-wall action movie that blends intricate fight sequences and on-the-nose social commentary in an entertaining package that will surely gain cult status in the near future. Just this weekend, Boy Kills World dished out loads of cartoon violence and over-the-top gore in a bid for John Wick-level fandom. Both movies bend or break the rules of reality to deliver quickly cut fight scenes that push the boundaries of the genre, all in an attempt to one-up the high standards set by the best movies in the Mission: Impossible and Fast and Furious franchises.

Yet the best of the April bunch is the one that has the lowest profile. City Hunter doesn't star anyone you'd recognize like It actor Bill Skarsgård in Boy Kills World and hasn't been backed by an extensive marketing campaign like Universal's Monkey Man. But the movie is a blast; it's like putting Pop Rocks in a can of Mountain Dew and chasing it down with a couple of Pixy Sticks. It's ludicrous, immature, and totally unrealistic. It's also my favorite action movie of 2024. Here's why you need to stream City Hunter pronto.
It's an adaptation of a massively popular franchise
