One of the most talked-about elements of the upcoming Jurassic World is the skill with which Chris Pratt’s character, Owen Grady, is able to communicate, and even cooperate with Velociraptors in various scenes from the film.
A new clip from Jurassic World released by Universal Studios and Legendary Pictures (via Yahoo Movies, embedded below) would seem to offer a glimpse of that relationship, as Owen is shown dealing with the raptors in order to save a park employee who takes a tumble into the pen. After running into the enclosure, Owen is seen challenging the raptors to “stand down” as they approach him, and telling the security force with rifles aimed at the raptors that shocking the deadly dinosaurs would eliminate all the trust he’s built up with them.
“Owen’s relationship with the raptors is complicated,” explained Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) in a November 2014 interview with Empire magazine. “They aren’t friends. These animals are nasty and dangerous and they’ll bite your head off if you make the wrong move. But there are men and women out there today who have forged tenuous connections with dangerous predators. That’s interesting territory to me.”
Earlier this week, Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg praised the franchise’s return to the big screen, comparing the film’s development to “seeing Jurassic Park come true.”
Directed by Trevorrow who also penned the script with Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Derek Connolly, Jurassic World is set 22 years after the events of the 1993 film that launched the franchise. The film chronicles the events that unfold when the theme park attempts to deal with flagging attendance by creating a genetically modified “super-dinosaur” that — as one might expect in a Jurassic Park movie — inevitably gets loose.
Along with Pratt, the film stars Bryce Dallas Howard (The Help), Ty Simpkins (Insidious), Jake Johnson (Let’s Be Cops), Nick Robinson (The Kings of Summer), Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi), Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil), BD Wong (Jurassic Park), Omar Sy (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Judy Greer (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Katie McGrath (Merlin), Lauren Lapkus (Blended), and Andy Buckley (Bridesmaids).
