The upcoming reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise is one of the more polarizing movie projects on the horizon, but no matter how you feel about the decision to start anew with the supernatural comedy series, cameras have officially began rolling today on director Paul Feig’s female-led Ghostbusters movie.
The Bridesmaids director commemorated the kickoff of filming with a post on Twitter yesterday featuring a container of familiar green goo that has become one of the staples of the franchise.

“And … action! #slimetimestartstomorrow” reads Feig’s caption for the photo.
Set to star Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon as a new team of Ghostbusters with Chris Hemsworth as their receptionist, the film is being envisioned as a wholesale reboot of the franchise that began with 1984’s Ghostbusters and continued with the 1989 sequel Ghostbusters II.
While the stars of the first two films won’t be reprising their roles, franchise veteran Dan Aykroyd recently teased that there will indeed be some sort of call-out to the prior series of films.
According to Comic Book Resources, Aykroyd suggested in a recent interview that the film will “[refer] to the first two in a really neat, classy way.”
“[It’s] going to be hot!” said the actor, who serves as the reboot’s executive producer. “The new one’s going to be big! The interplay, and with each of them, their individual voices are so well defined. They’re just such different characters, and there’s a friction. There’s a dynamic there. I’m not going to spoil it for people, but it’s going to be big, big! …This is all going to introduce [the franchise] to a whole new generation of girls that are going to want to be Ghostbusters. We always needed them.” Dan (and as you yourself said in the original film), we’re ready to believe you.
The Ghostbusters reboot is currently scheduled to hit theaters July 22, 2016.
