Universal releases Jaws 19 trailer for Back to the Future’s 30th anniversary

Close as we are to Oct. 21, 2015, the date Marty McFly and Doc Brown time-traveled to in Back to the Future Part II, we’re way behind in some ways. Not only are hoverboards not common enough to borrow from little kids on the street when you need to make a quick getaway, we’re still many, many sequels away from Jaws 19, the movie showing at the cinema Marty passed while exploring 2015. However, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Back to the Future trilogy, Universal has created a trailer for the fictional movie, giving us an idea of what moviegoers in the BTTF universe got to see.

When Back to the Future Part II came out in 1989, four Jaws films had already been made. Ironically, however, there has yet to be a new installment since then in spite of recent reboot rumors. Part II poked fun its own studio’s enthusiasm for sequels with a punchline that’s still very relevant today.

In the parody trailer for Jaws 19, a narrator gives a rundown of the film franchise, from its actual installments to the fictional ones leading up to 19. “Jaws made you afraid to go in the water,” it starts. “Jaws 2 made you afraid to go back in the water.” The subsequent list gets increasingly absurd, from “Cyber Jaws” (J.A.W.5.7.) to Jaws 17: Fifty Scales of Grey.

The premise of Jaws 19 takes on a new shark threat: “The oceans are disappearing and to save their home, the sharks must attack,” says the narrator. “This time, it’s really, really personal.”

Universal isn’t the only company honoring Back to the Future‘s anniversary by bringing fans a peek of what Marty got to experience in 2015. Nike has updated its design of the futuristic shoes it created for the movie back in the ’80s, and Pepsi announced plans to sell the special edition Pepsi Perfect seen in Part II. It’s a great time to be a Back to the Future fan.
