Marvel Studios’ upcoming Doctor Strange movie has begun filming, so it was only a matter of time before we got our first look at Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch on the set of the film.
As usual these days, the first photo from Doctor Strange is of the unofficial variety, and features a somewhat blurry shot of Cumberbatch looking a bit ragged as Dr. Stephen Strange on the Nepal set of the film.
Posted by Twitter user Prayush Khadka (aka @Technicalyright), the photo captures Cumberbatch mid-scene as the man who will become Marvel’s “Sorcerer Supreme,” surrounded by members of the crew and some filming equipment. Not only does Cumberbatch appear to be sporting something similar to the trademark facial hair of Dr. Strange, but the Nepal set of the scene suggests that the film will indeed draw from the character’s comic-book origin story — specifically, the former neurosurgeon’s journey to the the Himalayas in search of a mystical cure to the injuries that ended his career.

Along with Cumberbatch in the lead role, Doctor Strange features an impressive cast of supporting actors that includes Rachel McAdams as the still-unidentified female lead, Michael Stuhlbarg as Doctor Nicodemus West, Tilda Swinton as the mysterious figure known as “The Ancient One,” and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Doctor Strange’s arch-enemy Baron Mordo. Recent rumors indicate that Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen is also in talks for an unidentified villain’s role in the film.
Disney and Marvel Studios have yet to release any official images of from Doctor Strange, which is being directed by Sinister filmmaker Scott Derrickson from a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus).
Doctor Strange is currently scheduled to hit theaters Nov. 4, 2016.
As it stands now, the next phase of Marvel Studios will begin with Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016, then continue with Doctor Strange (Nov. 4, 2016), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May 5, 2017), the untitled Spider-Man solo movie (July 28, 2017), Thor: Ragnarok (Nov. 3, 2017), Black Panther (Feb. 16, 2018), Avengers: Infinity War — Part I (May 4, 2018), Ant-Man and the Wasp (July 6, 2018), Captain Marvel (March 8, 2019), and Avengers: Infinity War — Part II (May 3, 2019). That phase will conclude with Inhumans on July 12, 2019.
