Tim Burton’s 2010 film Alice in Wonderland overcame mixed reviews and a mediocre performance in U.S. theaters to become one of the highest-grossing films of all time worldwide and rank among the most successful films for both Burton and its star, Johnny Depp. So it’s no surprise that a sequel went into production shortly thereafter — a sequel that now has its first trailer.
Walt Disney Pictures released the first preview of Alice Through the Looking Glass this week, and the film promises to take audiences on a brand new adventure with Alice, Mad Hatter, and the rest of the eccentric residents of the magical, trippy world of Underland.
Footage from Alice Through the Looking Glass was previously revealed during Disney’s D23 Expo earlier this year, and brief clips from the trailer have been released over the last week or so to tease the full preview’s debut today. The official trailer clocks in at just under two minutes, and offers a peek at the host of returning characters that will appear in the film, as well as may of the newcomers making their Underland debut in the film.
Tim Burton produced this film, which was directed by James Bobin (The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted) from a script penned by The Lion King and Maleficent screenwriter Linda Woolverton, Through the Looking Glass serves as both a sequel and prequel to the 2010 film, with Alice (Mia Wasikowska, reprising her Alice in Wonderland role) traveling through time on a mission to save the Mad Hatter (Depp).
Along with Wasikowska and Depp, the film also features Helena Bonham Carter reprising her role as the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway returning as the White Queen, as well as the voices of Michael Sheen as White Rabbit, Stephen Fry as Cheshire Cat, and Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum, among other returning characters. Newcomers include Sacha Baron Cohen as Time, an enigmatic figure who sends Alice on her time-twisting journey through the history of Underland.
Alice Through the Looking Glass hits theaters May 27, 2016.
