Hateful Eight and other films leaked via Oscar screeners being downloaded like crazy

Last week, Quentin Tarantino was upset that a famed Los Angeles venue had in his view been pressured to replace The Hateful Eight with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but now he has an even bigger problem: His upcoming Western film, along with several others — including Leonardo DiCaprio’s Revenant — was leaked online. Data from Excipio released Monday shows that downloads of several films leaked this weekend topped 1 million in just 24 hours, according to Variety.

With the Academy Awards approaching, screeners had been submitted to voters for consideration. The process, however, proved once again to not be 100-percent secure. Piracy groups, including Hive-CM8, have taken credit for leaks, having managed to get their hands on unauthorized versions of several films and posted them online.

Among the films recently leaked are Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence; Michael Fassbender’s Steve JobsCarol with Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara; Brie Larson’s Room; and more. Excipio’s data showed that The Revenant was in highest demand (over 739,580 unique IP addresses downloaded the film in a 24-hour period). The Hateful Eight and Creed followed, accessed by 569,153 and 499,082 IP addresses, respectively.

In years past, watermarks on screeners gave more information about the leaks, but that is reportedly not the case this year. The copy of The Hateful Eight doesn’t contain timestamps or watermarks, according to Torrent Freak. As the website points out, it’s certainly not the Ultra Panavision 70mm format that Tarantino has been excited to bring to moviegoers, but evidently, many viewers haven’t been deterred.

For all of the films involved, the leaks are bad news, but it is especially so for those that had not yet hit theaters. That’s the case for both The Revenant and The Hateful Eight, so it’s not surprising that they led downloads in the 24-hour period measured. The two films are set to hit theaters on Christmas Day.

Logo for WWE Backlash France.

A WWE Premium Live Event (PLE) is heading to Lyon Metropolis for the first time for WWE Backlash France 2024. Since the formation of TKO in September 2023, WWE has prioritized global expansion. In 2024, Backlash France is the second PLE to be held outside the U.S., and it won't be the last. Five of the next six WWE PLEs will take place outside the U.S.

Heading into Backlash, WWE is entering the "American Nightmare Era." After finishing his story at WrestleMania 40, Cody Rhodes is now the Undisputed WWE Champion. A different era means a new crop of challengers for Rhodes. First up is AJ Styles, a former two-time WWE champion. Rhodes must bring his A-game if he wants to walk out of France as champion.

If you have to watch one Star Wars movie this May the 4th, stream this one
Luke looking off into the binary sunset before dying in The Last Jedi.

Every Star Wars fan has a favorite movie, and many Star Wars fans also hate at least one of the entries in one of their favorite franchises. That can make the exercise of choosing the perfect Star Wars movie to watch on May the 4th difficult. For all of the love this fan base has shown to the franchise over the years, it's also a fan base that has strong opinions about why one movie or another is worthy of your time.

This May 4, though, I'd recommend watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Almost undoubtedly the most controversial entry in the saga, one that makes some people furious and others jump for joy, The Last Jedi is worthy of your attention, whether you like what it's doing or not. Here are three reasons you should check it out:
