Earlier this year, comics publisher Titan Comics announced that it would release an official comic-book prequel to Independence Day: Resurgence set during the 20-year period between Earth’s initial victory over the aliens in the 1996 film Independence Day and the events of the upcoming sequel.

This week, Titan introduced the creative team for the series and debuted the cover art for the first two issues of the Independence Day comic, and also provided a synopsis of the tie-in story that will explain what happened during the two decades that preceded humanity’s next, devastating encounter with the aliens.

The series’ first issue, Independence Day #1, will be scripted by X-Men and Punisher MAX writer Victor Gischier with art by Steve Scott (Batman, Action Comics) and covers by Dio Neves and Alex Ronald. Hitting shelves March 2, the story is described as follows:

As our world unites against invaders from beyond the stars, beneath the Atlantic Ocean, another mysterious craft prompts a top-secret investigation by the US military, one which could prove the key to humanity’s survival … or its ultimate destruction.

Independence Day: Resurgence will bring back director Roland Emmerich behind the camera, and feature returning cast members Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, and Brent Spiner, as well as newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, and Sela Ward.

The official synopsis for the film reads as follows:

“We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.”

Independence Day: Resurgence hits theaters June 24, 2016.

Nicholas Galitzine and Anne Hathaway in The Idea of You.

Amazon Prime Video is starting off strong in May with several new additions to its library of movies, including the premiere of the original romantic drama The Idea of You. Last year's underrated Christmas drama The Holdovers is also now streaming on Prime Video. And as far as we're concerned, a good drama is never out of season.

Prime Video lost a handful of movies at the end of April, and Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza is only sticking around through the end of the weekend. But everything else on our list of the best movies on Amazon Prime Video right now is still available. Just keep reading, and you can make plans to watch any of the films that you want to see this month.

The 50 best movies on Netflix right now (May 2024)
Jenna Ortega in Miller's Girl.

It should come as no surprise that this year's hit rom-com Anyone But You has a stranglehold on the top slot of the list of the most popular movies on Netflix. But it is somewhat surprising to see Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver completely disappear from the list. That's going to make Rebel Moon – Part Three very unlikely to happen, and it may even discourage Netflix from committing extremely high budgets to its original sci-fi movies.

More tellingly, two of this week's new additions are modestly budget dramas: Miller's Girl and The Judge. The former features Wednesday's Jenna Ortega, while the latter has great lead performances by Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall. So it's not a mystery as to why both of those films are two of the top performers of the week.
