During last night’s MTV Movie Awards event, Marvel debuted the first full clip from Civil War, as introduced by Captain America himself, Chris Evans. The clip features the star-spangled superhero leading an assault on a building with the help of some of his Avengers teammates.
In the clip, Evans’ Captain America gets an assist from Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, the winged superhero known as Falcon, as well as Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda “The Scarlet Witch” Maximoff. The brief scene — which runs just over a minute — offers a nice example of Captain America as the play-calling strategist of the team, a role the character has often played in the Marvel Comics universe.
Along with Evans, Mackie, and Olsen, the film also features the debut of Chadwick Boseman as African superhero Black Panther and — as glimpsed in the most recent trailer — Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man. They’re joined by returning Marvel movie-verse stars Robert Downey Jr., Sebastian Stan, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Bettany, Paul Rudd, William Hurt, and Frank Grillo.
Set in the aftermath of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the film has Captain America, Iron Man, and the rest of The Avengers dealing with the consequences of their explosive adventures over the course of the first two phases of Marvel’s cinematic universe. Faced with the fallout from their actions, the team finds themselves divided on how to police their future endeavors, and that split turns into an all-out war between the world’s greatest heroes.
Civil War is directed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo. With a running time of two hours and 27 minutes, it’s also the longest Marvel Studios movie so far.
The film is scheduled to hit theaters May 6, 2016.
