Amazon orders five new pilots featuring Cuban nightclubs and space-faring clergymen

While Netflix sometimes seems to suck all of the air out of the room, series like Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent are reminders that — when it comes to original content — Ted Sarandos & Co. are far from the only game in town.

Case in point: Deadline is reporting that Amazon has just ordered five new pilots with some big/talented names attached.

Here’s the rundown:

Carnival Row, a drama from Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) set in a futuristic city inhabited by various unsavory creatures and at least one serial killer.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a dramedy from Gilmore Girls creator Amy-Sherman Palladino about a 1950s housewife who becomes one of the first female stand-up comics.

Strange New Things, a drama from writer Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies) and director Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) that follows an English pastor who journeys into deep space. The project was adapted from Michael Faber’s novel The Book of New Strange Things.

The Legend of Master Legend, a superhero comedy from writers Micah Fitzerman-Blue & Noah Harpster based on a Rolling Stone article that showcased real-life crime-fighting vigilantes.

Tropicana, a drama from producer Andrea Simon that centers around Cuba’s famous Tropicana Club in the days before the revolution of the 1950s.

There’s plenty to chew on here and — while the headliner among these five is probably del Toro’s project – each of these sounds interesting in its own way. Clergymen in space, trailblazing comediennes, and real-world superheroes are all intriguing premises, and, with Cuba beginning to open up to Americans, Tropicana sounds like it may just be the right show at the right time.

Time will tell if any of these shows catch on but, either way, we’re happy to see streamers like Amazon continuing to seed the TV landscape with creative ideas.

If you have to watch one Hulu show this May, stream this one
A man in an office looks worried in Under the Banner of Heaven.

While it doesn't boast a subscriber count in the hundreds of millions like some of its competitors, Hulu remains one of the premier streaming services for quality television. The Handmaid's Tale became the first TV show from a streaming service to win the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. The Bear and Only Murders in the Building have also been critical darlings and audience favorites. While these three shows are excellent, you should add another show, Under the Banner of Heaven, to your watchlist in May.

Created by Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black, Under the Banner of Heaven stars Andrew Garfield as Jeb Pyre, a Utah detective tasked with investigating the murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her baby daughter. The mysterious circumstances surrounding the murders may involve prominent members of the Mormon Church. The series is based on Jon Krakauer's 2003 nonfiction book.

What’s new on HBO and Max in May 2024
Isabela Merced in Turtles All the Way Down.

HBO and Max tend to start the month strong with a long list of movies from the past four decades. However, May's movie lineup on Max is looking pretty slim. It is nice to have three original Mad Max movies available to stream just in time for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga to hit theaters later this month. Beyond that, the only movies worth getting excited for in May are the Max original romantic drama Turtles All the Way Down and A24's The Iron Claw, which is based on the true story of the Von Erichs, a family of professional wrestlers.

Max also has the season 3 premiere of Hacks and a new documentary about MoviePass, as well as a lot of reality shows from the Discovery side of Warner Bros. Discovery. Our complete list of what's coming to HBO and Max in May 2024 is below. Titles without "HBO" in the listing will only be available on Max. DT's film and TV show recommendations are in bold.
