Tom Hanks takes on the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ in trailer for Eastwood’s ‘Sully’

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first trailer for Sully, which stars two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks as Capt. Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger, who famously landed US Airways Flight 1549 in New York’s Hudson River in January 2009 after both engines failed.

Directed by Clint Eastwood — a four-time Academy Award winner — the film chronicles the “Miracle on the Hudson” and its aftermath, in which Sully found himself in the spotlight for his daring, highly skilled emergency landing while also becoming the subject of an investigation regarding the cause of the crisis.

Sully also features Olympus Has Fallen and The Dark Knight actor Aaron Eckhart as Sully’s co-pilot, First Officer Jeffrey Skiles, as well as Academy Award nominee Laura Linney (The Savages, Kinsey) as Sully’s wife, Lorraine Sullenberger. The screenplay for the film was penned by Resistance and The Perfect Stranger screenwriter Todd Komarnicki, who based the screenplay on Sullenberger’s own published account of the experience, Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters, which he authored along with Jeffrey Zaslow.

The official synopsis for the film reads as follows:

On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed the “Miracle on the Hudson” when Captain “Sully” Sullenberger glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career.

Sully hits theaters September 9.
