While there are undoubtedly many benefits to working for internet search company, and overall world powerhouse, Google — it looks like we can now add access to cars that aren’t even available yet to that list. Which is exactly what happened when the lucky folks over at Google were recently treated to an all new 2012 Ford Focus Electric.

Right now Ford is taking pre-orders on its exciting new zero emissions, gas-free, all-electric car, and while the general public must wait well into the year to reserve a shot at getting one — of which only a limited number will be produced for the 2012 model year — it looks like Ford’s new all-electric Focus was presented to Google just before Christmas.

While an all new zero emissions, all-electric Focus is certainly an achievement in its own right, what truly impresses about the Focus is its speedy charging time. The new Ford EV is exclusively powered by a 23 kwh high-voltage lithium-ion battery and can reach a full charge on its 240-voly outlet in a little over three hours. To add some perspective, Ford’s closest rival, the Nissan Leaf, takes almost twice as long.

While we’re still a little skeptical of the 2012 Ford Focus Electric’s steep sticker price, we are excited to see what the folks over at Google make of their shiny new 2012 Ford Focus Electric – and even more excited to see the general reaction from the public once the cars come rolling off the assembly line and into the hands of consumers.

The Tesla Model Y is at its lowest price yet — but should you buy one?
Tesla Model Y

Despite increased competition in the space, the Tesla Model Y is still one of the best EVs out there. It has access to the best charging network, plus it offers among the best software experiences, as well as a solid range, especially in the longer-range models. And the Model Y is now down to its lowest price yet, meaning that if you were considering getting one, now is probably the time to buy.

The base price of the Tesla Model Y is down to $42,990 at the time of this writing, which represents a pretty huge price cut. That's before any tax incentives too -- and considering the car is eligible for the full $7,500 tax credit, that means you could get it for as low as $35,490.

Here’s how EVs charge as they drive on a stretch of Michigan road
Tech of the Week Electreon

Charging remains one of the biggest hurdles for mass EV adoption. Public charging infrastructure still isn’t extensive enough to merit driver confidence, and even the fastest chargers still require lengthy stops compared to refueling a gasoline car. But the State of Michigan and Israeli startup Electreon hope to prove that EVs can charge as they drive.

As detailed in a recent CleanTechnica explainer, the Michigan Department of Transportation is demonstrating in-road wireless charging hardware from Electreon on a quarter-mile stretch of 14th Street in Detroit. It’s being billed as the first such roadway in the U.S.
