Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG goes Black – well, in the digital realm at least

mercedes benz cla 45 amg goes black in the digital realm edition 4
The rendering of the CLA 45 AMG Black makes us wish we had invested more wisely.

The beauty about a conceptual rendering is just that: it’s a conceptual rendering. This means it gives car enthusiasts flexibility in coming up with some very cool ideas.

Take for example Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG as Black Series edition sports saloon, pictured above, done by digital designer Anton Gjorsev.

Featuring some of the same distinctive design elements as existing cars, but touting the Black edition badge like the C63 AMG Black Series, the digital concept features a CLA AMG with all the visual extras we love about the exclusive AMG Black breed. Gjorsev gave his vision of a CLA Black flared wheels and an aggressive front fascia that gives the car a much more menacing look.

Of course, we can only speculate if Mercedes-Benz will ever allow AMG to build a CLA Black. Rumors have been running high that it might, though – especially in light of the debut of the new CLA 45 AMG Racing Series Concept. The stripped down racer debuted at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and is intended to showcase the potential engineering and technical enhancements that can be added to the car.

The CLA 45 AMG concept is equipped with a turbocharged, 360-horsepower AMG 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which is mated to an AMG Speedshift DCT seven-speed sports transmission.

One thing’s for certain: we do know a higher-performance version of the base CLA 45 would be a welcomed addition to the Black Series lineup. It would be especially welcomed by those of us who are still a few investments shy of being able to afford the $275,000 SL 65 AMG in the Black.

Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro

Mercedes-AMG's entry in the cut-throat sports car segment just got a lot smarter. The performance arm of Mercedes-Benz traveled to the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show to unveil an updated GT that learned several new tech tricks without forgetting about dynamism. And, it expanded the lineup with a race-ready, limited-edition model called GT R Pro.

The GT made its debut in 2014, and AMG has learned a lot since by racing it around the world. It's channeling this experience into the GT R Pro, which blends the boundary between a street car and a race car. Though it's mechanically identical to the GT R, the Pro variant benefits from a fully adjustable coil-over suspension (including an adjustable front torsion bar made with carbon fiber) and from standard weight-saving components like powerful, fade-free carbon ceramic brakes. The roof panel is made with carbon fiber, too.

Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro teaser

Mercedes-AMG just can't stop tweaking its GT sports car. The two-seater is already available in a variety of strengths ranging from the base model up to the track-devouring GT R, not to mention a couple of racing versions. But Mercedes is preparing an even more aggressive variant, dubbed the GT R Pro, which will debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The limited-edition GT R Pro will be more track-focused than any previous AMG GT model, which means it should be an absolute beast. Mercedes isn't offering many other details beyond that, only noting that the GT R Pro was developed using lessons learned from the AMG GT3 and GT4 race cars. We wouldn't surprised to see some weight reduction and additional power from the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, which makes 577 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque in the non-Pro AMG GT R.
