AMD bundles free copies of Civilization: Beyond Earth with its Radeon R9 290 graphics cards

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to tell that Nvidia’s latest graphics card promotion was designed to undermine AMD’s own “Never Settle” offer. AMD was prepared to retaliate, apparently, as it only took the red team a few hours to fire back at the legion of green.

Every purchase of the company’s top-tier Radeon R9 290 series graphics cards now comes with a free copy of Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth.

That includes the R9 290, R9 290X, and R9 295X2. Plus, this can be combined with the Never Settle promo. Hence, you can score not just one free game, but four.

If you’re curious about the deal’s value, consider this. Beyond Earth, by itself, is worth $50. Then, you have a choice of dozens of slightly older, slightly cheaper titles. Assuming you pick, say, Alien: Isolation, Dirt 3, and Sleeping Dogs, that’s an additional combined value of around $95. In this scenario, the promo’s total value is close to $150, so Nvidia’s promo, which offers $60 in savings, becomes a mere blip on AMD’s radar. Well played, red squadron.

Keep in mind that Radeon 290 cards are also more affordable than the GTX 970 and GTX 980, which are the latest desktop members of the GeForce family. Sure, the R9 290X is older and, as our 980 review shows, slower than its direct rival. But for roughly $250 less, the bang for buck factor is hard to argue with.

However, Civilization: Beyond Earth may lack the juice that Assassin’s Creed Unity has. The turn-based strategy game from Firaxis was nowhere nearly as anticipated as Ubisoft’s newest historical action-adventure title.

The former is also readily available in stores, whereas the latter is keeping its fans waiting. Still, impulse buy factor aside, we feel AMD’s promo may be a better deal in the long run.

They say revenge is a dish best served cold, but if you have score-settling tools at your disposal, why wait? We’re guessing that this was AMD’s thinking when it decided to up the bundling ante.

This promo can only be redeemed with Radeon R9 290 Series purchases that are made through participating retail and e-tail partners. This includes big names like Amazon, MicroCenter, Newegg, and TigerDirect.

The full terms and conditions are detailed here.

AMD could launch its next-gen graphics cards and CPUs next year
AMD Ryzen 9 3900x pins.

AMD talked about a lot at Computex 2021, but it didn't touch on Zen 4 and RDNA 3 -- the architectures that will power Ryzen 7000 CPUs and Radeon RX 7000 GPUs, respectively. A new rumor suggests that AMD is teeing up these two product lines for late next year, and they'll launch at the same time.

The rumor comes from leaker @Broly_X1 on Twitter, who accurately predicted the three main talking points for AMD's Computex 2021 keynote. They said that both product lines will launch during the fourth quarter of 2022, and although they may not launch on the same day, they will launch around the same time. The rumor also suggests that AMD will "tape out" RDNA 3 later this year, which means they'll send the final production design off to manufacturing.

SanDisk’s latest drive sets new benchmark for consumer NVMe SSDs
The SanDisk WD Black SN8100 PCIe Gen 5 SSD with and without heatsink variants

SanDisk has officially introduced the WD Black SN8100, its latest high-end PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSD targeting PC enthusiasts, gamers, and professional users. With sequential read speeds of up to 14,900 MB/s and write speeds of 14,000 MB/s, the drive sets a new bar for consumer SSD performance, surpassing some of the best NVMe SSDs currently on the market, including the Crucial T705.

The SN8100 uses a standard M.2 2280 form factor and is available in capacities of 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB. It’s worth noting that the 1TB model offers lower write speeds, up to 11,000 MB/s, compared to the higher-capacity versions, which reach up to 14,000 MB/s.

Pairing the RTX 5090 with a CPU from 2006? Nvidia said ‘hold my beer’
RTX 5090.

Nvidia's best graphics cards are often paired with expensive CPUs, but what if you want to try a completely mismatched, retro configuration? Well, that used to be impossible due to driver issues. But, for whatever reason, Nvidia has just removed the instruction that prevented you from doing so, opening the door to some fun, albeit nonsensical, CPU and GPU combinations.

The instruction in question is called POPCNT (Population Count), and this is a CPU instruction that also prevents Windows 11 from being installed on older hardware. Its job is counting how many bits are present in a binary number. However, as spotted by TheBobPony on X (Twitter), POPCNT will not be a problem for Nvidia's latest graphics cards anymore.
