First look at the new Twitter Web interface

On Tuesday, Twitter announced major changes to the way users can interact with its Web interface. It is nothing short of a total multimedia makeover.  The new Twitter means a better, more enjoyable user experience for users. There’s more to see, more to do and more to engage with, without having to leave Twitter.

The new Twitter will be rolled out slowly over the next few weeks to all users, but today we can show you exactly what that looks like, as reported by Wired.

Now tweets can be expanded upon in a second column that opens up next to a users Twitter stream. That will display rich multimedia content, from videos (as shown above) to pictures and their location on a map (as shown below).

Not only is this a multimedia makeover, but Twitter is positioning itself to act more like a desktop application. Case in point, the new Twitter incorporates a fancy set of keyboard shortcuts. This is going to be a hot feature for Twitter power users who no longer need to be slowed down by interacting with a mouse. For anyone that has ever used the keyboard shortcuts in Gmail, you know what a coveted features this is.

These changes will undoubtedly reframe the landscape and competitive nature of third-party Twitter applications, now that many of their cutting-edge features are included within Twitter’s Web interface.

The new Twitter interface is also a step in the right direction for companies that are looking to advertise. With content embedded in the Web interface, getting a customer or fan to click on the link should be easier since it no longer involves being directed to a new site.

So what are the drawbacks? Although more user-friendly, Twitter still doesn’t provide analytics to users. It also doesn’t provide conversation threads or nestings of tweets between users. We’d expect to see these features crop up sometime in the near future.

The drama over at Twitter, both from a business as well as user experience perspective, is truly one of a kind. Elon Musk is making changes that not all users will appreciate, and his cavalier attitude towards content isn't winning him many free-speech-absolutist fans like him. Naturally, a lot of Twitter users are looking for alternatives, and one option that has really skyrocketed in popularity lately is Mastodon.

Mastodon is decentralized, which means the platform is not limited to a single server controlled by one large corporation, like Twitter or Facebook. Instead, any person can create their own Mastodon server, which is commonly known as an instance, complete with its own set of rules. That means you set the guidelines for a Mastodon server, and there is no ad serving or data harvesting happening here.

Twitter has reportedly suspended signups for Twitter Blue

The start of Elon Musk's tenure as owner of Twitter has not been without its struggles and chaos. And so far, the chaos Twitter currently finds itself in shows no signs of letting up anytime soon.

So it seems fitting that the latest news on the Twitter front is that signups for the microblogging platform's $8-per-month Twitter Blue subscription have reportedly been suspended. On Friday, Forbes reported that new signups for Twitter's newly revamped Blue subscription have apparently been disabled, having "verified that users have not been able to sign up to the service for more than an hour," and also citing that the option to sign up for Blue on the iOS app had disappeared as further proof of the suspension. The Verge also noted that some users may still see the option to subscribe, only to then be met with an error message. One of the editors at Digital Trends said the option to sign up for the service is just missing from his iOS app's menu, noted that it had been like that "since at least 8 p.m. PT last night," and shared the following screenshot:
