What You Need

  • A computer with an internet connection

  • Your existing ChatGPT login and password

We'll walk you through the process of updating your ChatGPT password quickly and securely, covering everything you need to know to keep your AI adventures safe.

How to reset your ChatGPT Password

The ChatGPT website's security feature operates a little differently from what you may be used to. For example, if you click on the user icon in the upper-right corner of the ChatGPT home screen and select Settings, then Security, you won't find an option to actively reset your password.

You will, however, find an option to enable two-factor authentication, which you should absolutely go back and do as soon as you finish resetting your password. But first, let's get you logged out.

Step 1: To log out of ChatGPT, click on the user icon in the upper-right corner of the screen and select Log Out. The system may pop up a screen asking if you want to log back in or stay logged out. If it does, choose the latter option.

Step 2: Now, log yourself back in. Once you've successfully logged yourself out of the system, the ChatGPT page will display a pair of radio buttons in the lower-left corner of the screen, one to Log In, the other to Sign Up. Choose the former option.

Step 3: Manually enter your email address and select Forgot Password. The login screen will give you the option to either manually enter a password or select a radio button to Continue With your existing Google, Microsoft, or Apple accounts and gain access through those.

Even if you have already linked one of those accounts and are using your Gmail, Microsoft, or Apple email address to log in, type it into the field and select Continue, then select the Forgot Password link.

Step 4: Enter your email address to send yourself a password reset link. At the Reset your password screen, just type your email address into the field and hit Continue. The system will send a password reset link to that account (be sure to check your spam folder if it doesn't show up within a few minutes).

Step 5: Select the link in that email to go to a new Reset Your Password page, where you will enter and reenter your new password. Just make sure it's at least 12 characters long or, even better, pick yourself up a password manager like LastPass or OnePass and have it generate secure passwords on your behalf.

Step 6: Log back in using your new credentials. Once you've updated your password, follow the link back to the ChatGPT home page and select Log In, either from the popup menu or by using the link in the lower left like you did in Step 2. That's it. That's all you have to do. Happy chatting.

Can I change my ChatGPT account's email address the same way?

While you can easily change your account password, the same cannot be said for the email address associated with it. Per OpenAI's help page, "We do not support updating the email address associated with your ChatGPT/OpenAI account."

In short, if you want your ChatGPT account to use a different email than the one you're already using, you're going to need to sign up for a new ChatGPT account. What's more, the company does not offer any way to transfer your existing chat data to that new account, so any conversations you've had to date will be left behind.

If you do choose to use a new account, be sure to tidy up -- delete your old ChatGPT account.

ChatGPT is immensely powerful, capable of handling everything from text and image analysis to answering questions and collating information.

But are you making the most of it? Check our list of the best ChatGPT tips to learn more.

macOS clipboard app Maccy has a fake out there stealing passwords
PamStealer malware is disguising itself as Maccy to target Mac users
Depicting of the Maccy clipboard app for macOS on a laptop with letters inb the background.

A fake version of Maccy, a popular clipboard manager for macOS, is being used to deliver a newly discovered Mac malware strain called PamStealer. Researchers at Jamf say the malware impersonates the real open-source app, but its actual purpose is to steal data and capture a victim’s login password.

PamStealer arrives as a disk image containing an AppleScript file that impersonates Maccy. Once the user opens that file, macOS launches it in Script Editor, where the on-screen instructions tell them to press Command-R. To someone expecting a normal app installer, that may look like an odd setup step. In reality, that action runs hidden malware code and starts the attack.

A new technology teaching drones to feel pain could stop your self-driving car from harming itself
Drones first, autonomous cars next. A pain-sensing system that detects failure before it happens has real stakes for self-driving vehicles.
Transportation, Vehicle, Car

When you sprain your ankle in the middle of a run, your body sends a pain signal to your brain, forcing you to stop. Essentially, the ability to sense pain stops you from pushing through the injury and causing further self-harm.

Researchers at Delft University of Technology and Wageningen University have applied this exact concept to drones, giving them a digital equivalent of a nervous system that recognizes a faulty part and triggers a pain-like warning signal. What's even more interesting is that the technology could find use in self-driving cars.

Anthropic’s most advanced publicly available Claude model is still leaving standard subscription access after July 7, but the company is now trying to calm fears that the move is permanent.

Fable 5 recently returned to Claude after drawing scrutiny from the U.S. government. Anthropic said it would be included on Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans for up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7. After that date, the model is set to move to usage-credit billing, meaning users will pay for access outside their regular plan limits.
