AT&T Announces VoIP 911

AT&T is phasing in an Enhanced 911 service to its AT&T CallVantage Service users later this summer. The E-911 service will deliver a caller’s name, number, and address directly to the computer of a dispatcher when activated.

The new service has been testing the new service in a market by market approach since April of 2004. In service areas where the company has installed and tested E-911, new subscribers are automatically signed up with it. To date, the company has migrated tens of thousands of lines. Exceptions to this are subscribers who have selected out of area telephone numbers as their primary VoIP lines.

AT&T’s CallVantage service works with a customer’s broadband connection and offers unlimited local and long-distance domestic calls, and discounted rates for international calls for $29.99 a month.

In the grip of an emergency, the first move for many Americans is to call 911. The emergency response system has been around for decades, but like many institutions, it has struggled to keep up with technology. Call centers are easily overwhelmed in big emergencies, they often can’t track the locations of people calling from cell phones, and they’re vulnerable to hacking. An egregious example of this came in 2017, when a hacker used a malicious link on Twitter to hijack thousands of phones, forcing them to call 911 repeatedly, flooding call centers with false alarms.

“I’ve been studying and working in disasters, diseases, and emergency management for over 10 years,” says Ginny Katz, founder and CEO of HazAdapt. “At the end of my master’s degree, I really began to dive into the tech because I thought we really need some better technology here, and it just seems like what’s on the market today is not cutting it.”

“I can imagine somebody that has this entire suite of hands,” he said. “They’re a farmer, and they’re working on their tractor and welding and harvesting the corn -- and they’ve got this heavy-duty hand that is incredibly durable, which can open and close and lift heavy, heavy things. But the farmer also happens to be a pianist. When they go inside, they put on another super lightweight hand where the fingers spread and move really fast. All this hand needs to do is to push piano keys to play the piano.”
