EA Announces Games For Next-Gen Consoles

EA’s announced next generation line-up will be at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, May 18-20, 2005.

New games from the EA SPORTS and EA brands that will be unveiled at E3 include: Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06, FIFA 06, Madden NFL 06, NBA LIVE 06, Need For Speed Most Wanted and The Godfather. EA’s focus on character development, animation, gameplay innovation, online play, and graphics will be showcased in its next generation titles.

“EA’s diverse next generation line-up will give game players worldwide an early taste of what the next generation hardware systems can do,” said Don Mattrick, EA president of worldwide studios. “These games are so rich in terms of graphic fidelity, levels of detail in relation to characters and environments, audio, gameplay innovation and overall entertainment value that they will draw in new consumers and give even the most seasoned gamers something to cheer about. The creativity and technology combined with the talent of EA’s development teams will create a new era in videogame design. This next generation of games will hoist interactive entertainment to an unprecedented position on the entertainment ladder.”

Just be aware that this deal doesn't include the game, sadly, and is a Geek Squad refurbished version of the console, so you will have to buy the game separately if you want to play it. Even so, it's a great bit of memorabilia for you to grab.

World of Goo 2 might just be the Nintendo Switch’s next must-own co-op game

When I sat down to demo World of Goo 2 at this year’s GDC, I noted to the developers on hand how surprising it was to see a sequel after so long. “It’s been, what? Ten years?” I said. I was very far off the mark: They noted that the original World of Goo launched in 2008. After playing a few levels (and having an existential crisis over time’s rapid passing), I’d find myself wondering how such an obvious slam dunk didn’t come sooner.

Like its predecessor, World of Goo 2 is a physics-based puzzle game where players craft structures from little, gooey critters. It presents a series of engineering challenges, as poorly built structures will topple under the weight of all those jiggly little pals. Rather than reinventing that concept entirely, World of Goo 2 adds some wild new ideas onto that stable structure that opens up its puzzle potential. The result is a chaotic co-op game that’s a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch.

As the use of AI rises in games, SAG-AFTRA is fighting to make the tech ethical

Every year, the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) acts as an all-important watercooler moment for the video game industry. It’s the one time a year where developers can widely gather to share their innovations, discuss the state of the industry, and advocate for change at scale. This year’s show, though, is especially crucial. It comes amid a catastrophic wave of layoffs across studios that’s put well over 10,000 individuals out of work. That’s happening as executives look to tools like generative AI to cut costs, which has created a firestorm over labor issues.

Unionization and worker protections are set to be the headline of this year’s show, and there’s a major player in attendance that will speak to those issues. Representatives from the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) will be on hand this week, hosting panels on queer representation and the dangers of deepfake technology in games. While the union will speak to several parallel issues currently plaguing the industry, it’ll also be a key voice in championing the ethical use of AI during a week where that’s sure to be a heated subject.
