Nintendo 64 classics Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, Turok 2 headed to Steam

Night Dive Studios announced that it will issue “modernized versions” of the landmark Nintendo 64 first-person shooters Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil for PC platforms via Steam, GOG, and other online storefronts.

A company dedicated to upgrading and reissuing classic games for modern PCs, Night Dive Studios previously released updated ports of titles like The 7th Guest, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, and System Shock 2.

Released in 1997, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was among the first batch of first-person shooters developed specifically for consoles. The game offered a unique control scheme that mapped movement to the Nintendo 64 controller’s face buttons and featured environmental challenges that took advantage of its first-person perspective, among other innovations.

Turok 2 premiered in 1999, introducing a split-screen multiplayer mode and a more varied and challenging single-player campaign. Both games were subsequently ported to PCs after their Nintendo 64 debuts. The series made infrequent (and less well-received) appearances on consoles in the years afterward, with the most recent being 2008’s Turok for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PCs.

Night Dive Studios’ release plans will see Turok and its sequel released digitally via Steam, the Humble Bundle store, GOG (Good Old Games), GamersGate, Greenman Gaming, and via the publisher’s website. The company notes that both games will be “re-mastered for today’s modern computers with enhanced graphics and other improvements.”

“When Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was first released it was nothing short of revolutionary,” Night Dive Studios founder and CEO Stephen Kick stated. “To that point, no game had ever offered the combination of graphics and an open world environment that Turok featured. We are very excited to have the opportunity to bring this great franchise back to life and to be able to share these great titles with today’s gaming audience.”

Release dates for the revamped Turok and Turok 2 are not yet known.
