YouTube TV adds new Spanish plans

YouTube TV today announced a pair of new Spanish-language plans. One is an add-on to YouTube TV’s base plan, and the other is all Spanish all the time.

The separate plan — aptly named “the Spanish Plan” — costs $25 a month for the first six months and $35 a month after. You’re able to sign up for this package without requiring the $65-a-month base YouTube TV plan. It features nearly 30 Spanish-only channels.

If you just want to build on your existing YouTube TV package, the new Spanish Plus add-on is available for $15 a month. (It’ll cost you just $10 a month for the first six months.) Spanish Plus will add more than 25 Spanish-language channels. They include:

Spanish Plus can be added in the account section of the settings, available here. It lives alongside other add-ons such as Sports Plus, Entertainment Plus, 4K Plus — which you’ll need if you want to watch anything in 4K — and other premium options.

YouTube TV is believed to be the second-largest livestreaming service in the United States, with more than 3 million subscribers when it last gave an update in October 2020. (Hulu With Live TV likely still leads the way at 4.3 million subscribers.)

What is DirecTV Stream: plans, pricing, channels, and more

DirecTV Stream is the latest name for what once was AT&T’s live tv and on-demand streaming service, previously called AT&T TV, among other names. It's now jointly owned by AT&T and private equity firm TPG Inc., if you're concerned about such things. That new venture means that we no longer have insight into how many subscribers DirecTV Stream has, but it's believed to be the smallest of the live streaming services in the United States. (The last time we got numbers was at the end of 2020, when the service was at about 656,000 subscribers, or about half that of Fubo, or no bigger than 13 percent of YouTube TV's base.)

In any event, you're looking to cut the cable cord, DirecTV Stream is on more service to consider among others such as Hulu With Live TV, Sling TV, and the aforementioned YouTube TV.

Sling TV is not the most simple of streaming services. That’s by design. It’s built on two tracks — Sling Orange and Sling Blue. You can get one of the tracks for a paltry sum, or you can get both for just a little bit more. (Which is what Sling really encourages you to do.) There’s a little overlap between them, but neither has as many channels as you’ll get on its competitors.

To augment that, each track has its own slate of optional add-ons, which Sling TV calls Extras. They’ll cost you a few more dollars each month. While that can quickly take you into the same price range services like YouTube TV, Hulu With Live TV, and Fubo, it’s all about your ability to choose to have those add-ons — or not.

Do you need the internet for Sling TV?

Given that it’s a relatively simple streaming service — and also one of the less expensive options — it’s not unreasonable to ask if you need the internet for Sling TV. It’s just one of those basic questions you should research before spending a bit of money every month.

So let’s spell it out: Yes, you need the internet to watch Sling TV because it is an internet-based streaming service. Mostly. More on that caveat in a second.
