Flo smart home water alert users can get their water damage expenses paid for

Flo Technologies announced HomeProtect, an optional home water damage reimbursement program, which will pay subscribers up to $2,500 for out-of-pocket homeowner’s insurance deductible expense.

For the $5 monthly HomeProtect subscription fee, homeowners also get access to greater-than-standard levels of support for problems, questions, and water use analysis. The key HomeProtect component, however, is the financial security of insurance deductible coverage. HomeProtect is available only to customers who bought the Flo smart home water-monitoring and conservation device.

As a reminder, homeowners install the $500 Wi-Fi-connected Flo device on their home’s main water supply line. After the hardware installation, which usually requires hiring a plumber, owners connect the hardware and Flo iOS or Android smartphone app.

With the hardware and software installed, Flo continuously monitors water usage in the house. Flo monitors water pressure, flow, and temperature.

The system is designed to learn normal water-usage patterns and to proactively detect and respond when it detects an abnormality such as a leak, no matter how small. When it detects a leak, Flo shuts off the water supply. Customers also can configure the smartphone app to receive alerts when unusual usage occurs or when it shuts the water off.

In addition to watching for potentially damaging water leaks, the app can help homeowners conserve by providing hard data on how much and where water is used. The company claims that once the Flo device learns about customer’s water usage, the smartphone app displays the amount of water used by each fixture and appliance in the home. According to the manufacturer, the device has helped U.S. homeowners save more than 1 million gallons of water since the device launched in February.

The Flo water consumption conservation feature is an important but secondary purpose. The primary job is to prevent water damage. And that is where the new HomeProtect program comes into play.

As part of the HomeProtect launch, Flo will help new customers with the installation costs. Flo will reimburse $150 for Flo device plumbing installation costs for systems purchased from June 12 to June 17. Customers who buy a Flo monitoring system during the promotion do not have to subscribe to HomeProtect to be eligible for the plumbing reimbursement.

8 Smart home products that can help you combat the flu
Dyson Pure Humidify Cool Sensor Data.

Flu season is never fun, especially if multiple members of your family or friend group end up catching it. A bad case of the flu can knock you down for weeks and leave you feeling awful. But let’s look on the bright side: There are plenty of smart home upgrades you can make to help fight the flu -- or least stay more comfortable while curled on your couch. Here are our favorites that help the most when you’re feeling lousy.
1. Nest Smart Thermostat

The latest Nest Smart Thermostat from Google is more affordable than ever while still offering some of the best thermostat features around. That includes easy temperature adjustment right from the app, so you can bump the temp up or down depending on how the chills and fever are going. The proximity detectors can also tell when you’re shuffling around in the middle of the night, unable to sleep, and will turn on the heat to help keep you warm. We’re also big fans of Ecobee’s new SmartThermostat, which includes additional comfort settings that are easy to set if you’re willing to pay a bit more.
2. Dyson AM10 Humidifier

Getting my smart home devices to switch Wi-Fi networks is annoying
Amazon Echo Show 5 (2nd Gen 2021) on table.

Let's address the two-dozen little elephants in the room: Swapping all of my smart home devices to a new Wi-Fi network should not be as annoying as it is. I recently switched to a new router, which means the SSID (network name) changed. Every smart device in my home had to be reconnected to the new network, but what I found is that there is no cohesive way to do that.

This is further exacerbated by the fact that certain devices, like the Amazon Echo, require you to press a physical button on the device as part of the change. Smart home technology is only as smart as its weakest link, and the difficulty in swapping networks is unnecessarily frustrating.
Smart home tech needs to be accessible in one place
A smart home hub should function as a central control, rather than just a way to quickly control devices. The most-used system in my home is Alexa, and I use the Alexa app to monitor and control the majority of devices throughout my home. If the device is Amazon-branded, I can change its network through the Alexa app.

Summer’s a scorcher. Here’s how smart home tech can offer relief
Google Nest Thermostat (2020)

Summer is officially here, and many people are struggling to stay cool as heat waves hit areas that don't normally experience intense summer heat. Through smart use of your devices, you can fight the heat and stay nice and cool even on the hottest days. Here's how.
Set a smart bed to cool down before you sleep

Sleep scientists suggest the best temperature for sleep is around 68 degrees. When it's over 90 outside, reaching that temperature inside isn't feasible without substantial energy bills. A smart bed can offer a better solution.
